Hardware Purchases on child account, how does it work

So I am a bit confused on how these child accounts work on switch as far as purchases. I have done all purchases through the parent account and have eshop credit right now. With Sony I can let my child spend my funds and set a spending limit. With Nintendo do children have completely separate funds and eshop accounts? From what I have read I only see that I can block purchases or have notifications sent for purchases but am I to assume for him to say buy a fortnite battlepass that I have to enter my credit card in his account or buy him an eshop card he can use to add credit separately from mine?

Is Sony really doing this better than Nintendo?

It does look like you CAN restrict eShop purchases, but I don't see anything specific to enabling spending "limits".
