I pulled my old Playstation 1 out of the closet, just to try this swap trick I've seen on youtube, but no matter how many tries I can't seem to get it to work. I have the sensor button taped down, but I think my problem is the timing. I have an original disc (Twisted Metal 4) and a perfectly burned backup of Castlevania Symphony of the Night but I've tried swapping like 30 times and I just can't seem to do it. Some YouTube videos I've seen are confusing me because I see people taking it out at different times and stuff.

Can anyone give me some concrete help on this?

I used a $12 gameshark clone of some sort in the rear serial port to play imports and backups, it was worth it and it never broke. I bundled it with my ps1 when i sold it though.
Yeah that's probably no help to you but there's no potential to wear out your motor swapping discs on the fly with that method.
