The 4 to 6 hours claim is something they'd likely use as a term for marketing, and it should mean that under idle conditions, you should get 4 to 6 hours of battery life. My PSP lasted me 6 hours listening to music on the plane, but can hardly hold up to 4 when playing games. Likely the same case for the NGP, where we'll probably get the 4 to 6 hours if we just use it for music playback, and possibly 3G and Wi-Fi disabled. Games will probably diminish the battery down to 2.5 hours to 3 hours.
Mmm. no. I'm bound to take the word of an actual Sony employee over someone who is just posting annecdotal evidence on a message board.
Kotaku claimed Sony was going for "PSP 3000 battery life." Meanwhile Sony's own John Koller claims that PSP 3000 battery life is 20 to 30 minutes less than the earlier model PSPs. IGN specifically states that PSP 1000 battery life was 3.3 hours
So its safe to assume that PSP2 battery life is 3 hours or less
I saw a thickness chart out there (I'll see if I can find it again), that compares this to other systems, like the 3DS, and DSi, its pretty comparable (maybe a little less, thickness wise) but its wider.
[titleefinition]Definition of PORTABLE
1
a : capable of being carried or moved about b : characterized by portability c : usable on many computers with little or no modification
2
archaic : bearable
So, for something to be considered portable, it just needs to be small/light enough that one can carry it without assistance.
Therefore, by definition, the NGP will definitely be "portable."
Now, whether or not it will fit in your pocket.
Let us compare it to two portable gaming systems that are not on the fancy kotaku graph, the original Game Boy, and the original DS.
(Dimensions taken from respective wikipedia pages)
Code:
orig DS
148.7 mm x 84.7 mm x 28.9 mm
14.87cmÂÂ 8.47cmÂÂÂÂ2.89cm
363.99 cm^3
NGP:
83.55 mm x 182 mm x 18.6 mm
8.355cmÂÂÂÂÂÂ 18.2cmÂÂ 1.86 cm
282.83cm^3
Orig Game Boy:
90 mm x 148 mm x 32 mm
9cmÂÂÂÂ 14.8cmÂÂÂÂ 3.2cm
426.24cm^3
So, I converted the dimensions in mm to cm, then multiply them to get the volume in cm3.
The actual amount of pocket space the NGP would require is much less than the first Game Boy, and the first DS. Both of which have been carried in pockets.
While it may not fit in a skin-tight pair of jeans, I'm betting it will fit fine in most of what I wear.
And honestly, carrying electronics in your pocket is rather hard on them (DS lite L button anyone?
). Anymore I tend to carry my PSP/DS in a pocket of my backpack.
Anyways, /rant, but I'm tired of reading the stupid complaints this (in dev) system has been getting.
you wanted power, you will get some bulkiness. get over it.
i guess you can say there are levels of portability. and the NGP seems to have some greater portability than other devices. and less portability than what the complainers are comparing it to.
To put things into perspective, the GameBoy Micro had a sharper display than the GameBoy Advance SP due to the finer (and smaller) dot pitch of the Micro compared to the SP.
All this while the Micro had a smaller screen than the SP (Which, correct me if I'm wrong, results in less pixels in the Micro's screen compared to the SP)
So yeah, with a smaller screen, the images should look sharper
