Tutorial  Updated

PS2 .psu Saves => PS3 internal memory card (without needing a PS2 -> PS3 memory card)

Tutorial: ps2 .psu saves => ps3 internal memory card
(without needing a PS2 -> PS3 memory card adaptor)

The original method isn't mine, I just found it from "link at end of Tut" tried it and got my ps2 .psu format saves from my old ps2 working.
I'm just made a few edits the original post that worked for me (personally) and posting a better TUT here.

Important Note: This method will ONLY work for Modded/hacked Ps3's with CFW"

Things you may need

1. Multiman: http://store.brewology.com/multiman.php

2. Mymc 2.6: http://www.csclub.uwaterloo.ca:11068/mymc/mymc-alpha-2.6.zip

3. PS2SaveConverter_0_030: http://www.ps2savetools.com/wpfb-file/ps2saveconverter_0_030-zip/

4. USB thumb drive (any 1gb or over will do)

If you want to go from .PSV virtual PS1/PS2 card -> .PSU, use one of these programs:

5. PSV Exporter: http://www.ps2savetools.com/wpfb-file/psvexporter11-zip/

6. PSV Tool from julialy: https://github.com/uyjulian/psvtool

=======================================

Step 1:

On PS3,

Go to "Memory card Utility"
and Create a fresh new
"Internal Memory Card.VM2" card.

Then open multiman and go to file manager,
navigate to dev_hdd0
next go to savedata
then navigate to vmc
there you will see a file called "Internal Memory Card.VM2"
or whatever you named your ps2 internal memory card.

hit circle on that file and copy to the root of your usb drive.

Step 2:

Take the thumb drive and stick it into your computer...

In the root of the thumb drive you should see the file 'internal memory card.VM2'

*MAKE A BACKUP OF THIS FILE SOMEWHERE SAFE INCASE SOMETHING GOES WRONG
(ALWAYS HAVE A BACKUP OF THIS FILE OR YOU MAY LOOSE YOUR SAVES)

Step 3:

Rename this file to "Internal Memory Card.ps2"

Step 4:

Open this file with Mymc-gui.exe

click on file and then import,

select your .psu file you would like to add to the card
(whether you get it from GameFAQs or just backup your own saves from your ps2 using "ULaunch elf")

NOTE: if your file isn't in .psu format use the PS2SaveConverter_0_030 to convert it!

Step 5:

Now when you have imported all your saves to the card,

close Mymc-gui and Copy the edited "Internal Memory Card.ps2" file
to the root of your USB thumb drive.

Change it's name from "internal memory card.ps2" back to "internal memory card.VM2"

(or whatever name your orginal memory card had on the ps3, but add the .VM2 at the end).

Step 6:

Plug your USB thumb drive back into your ps3

Step 7:

Go to multiman & in file manager look under
"dev_hdd0/savedata/vmc"

Delete the existing "Internal memory card.VM2"*

*(Cricle, delete, press X)

Step 8:

Cpy the edited "Internal Memory Card.VM2" file from your thumb drive to "dev_hdd0/savedata/vmc directory"*

*(Cricle, copy, Cricle, Paste)

Step 9:

Exit multiman & check your internal memory card PS2 on xmb area in the "Memeory card".

Your Old PS2 saves should be there in the .VM2 & ready to use ;)

hope this helps!

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Note 2:

using mymc it is also possible to extract your Game saves in .psu format to store on PC etc (for safe keeping)
or inject into a fresh new .VM2 card.

Nice! But do you know if it's possible to take a PS3 virtual save and transfer it to PS2 .psu?

yes, if you would like to do the reverse process,
go from .PSV -> .PSU, you can :)

added programs that you can use to do this in Tut!

enjoy!

I wrote a tool 3 years ago to extract data from .psv files that are created when transferring save data from virtual PS2 memory cards on the PS3 to USB storage devices. https://github.com/uyjulian/psvtool

I'm thinking about adding more export/import formats to MyMC.

nice, but um how can you use this program? via command line?
also, can I add it to my tut above?

Hi there, I followed the instruction but once the memory cards *.VM2 copied to the PS3 on the xmb is says no save data
I checked the *.psu files with save converter and ps 2 save builder the info is there. only thing may done wrong is coping the sys config file bde... from the original ps2 I don't know if it would cause problem otherwise I can't figure out what went wrong in the process. any would be great as I am trying to bkp my old saves from PS2 and PS1(that's another dilema:wacko:)

It's been awhile since I've done this like years, but I think I had to rebuild database in safe mode. Turn off your PS3 hold down the button you'll hear several beeps then it'll turn off hold it down again and you'll hear some more beeps then safe mode will come up, choose rebuild database. You'll have to plug in your controller with usb cable.

Reporting in 7 years later, but thank you SO SO SO much for this easy tutorial!!! I just copied all my saves from my old PS2 and I'm going to sell it after all these years, and migrate all my games and saves over to my CFW PS3. Much appreciated!

@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
