Nintendo's marketing blitz will take care of any confusion. Add to that that the 3DS is going to garner so much free press because it's the first device to achieve 3D without no stinkin' glasses.
First game system? Yes, First device? No... There is already a video camera that can do that... (read about it on engadget)

Heres one way to put it: The 3DS is what the DS was to the GBA.
Err, that makes no sense. This way you say the 3DS = the DS.

You have to put it like this: the 3DS is to the DS as the DS was to the GBA.
Well, that the fact you understood what he meant, means it made sense no?

I got what what he meant.

You fellows need to stop worrying about names, and what D and S stands for.
It's just a brand. Never had to make sense before, never will.

Some people had the same problem with the gameboy's name (going from colour to advance), e.g. going from gbc to gba, or nes to snes. But this time you have now have ds to 3ds.

I also though of a semi-complex reason why the 3ds could refer to 3 screens. The 3d screen has two separate screen resolutions that get added together (IE two screens) plus the touch screen that makes three.

I must say Nintendo always name things so they can have multiple meanings or so somebody can read their own meaning into it.

PS.

Sorry if you can't understand what I said, I read over it again and it started to not make sense in my head anymore.

I just meant that it might not make sense to other people because of the part of the sentence he forgot.

BTW, it's not because you understand what it says that it actually makes sense, it all depends on the way you interpret it.

People seriously see the 3DS as another separate line from the DS like DS was to GBA?

Well it depends on how you think about it. If you believed Nintendo back when they said they were supporting the GameBoy, GameCube, and DS brands as separate entities I guess the same could be thought of for the Wii, DS, and 3DS brands. But that was just so they could sell the remaining GBA hardware and get away with releasing the GB Micro. The GameBoy brand died when Pokemon Diamond and Pearl were announced.

If you really think about it(which shouldn't take much effort, like, at all), Nintendo's handheld console line has held a completely linear path from the original GB to the 3DS. The 3DS is to DSi as the DS is to GBA SP (and GBA to GBC and so forth)

The name isn't anything other than mixing 3D and DS using the same D from both. The hardware itself and marketing through in-store demos and word of mouth from people like us from the Internet will let the general public realize that this is more than just a small upgrade like the DSi or GBA SP.
