Poll: what do you think of VR gaming?

Fove-VR-Headset.jpg

Virtual reality seemed like an impossible dream a few years back.
Now that there are several major solutions out there (PS VR, Oculus, HTC, Samsung...) VR gaming is a reality.
Well a virtual reality at least! So as a gamer, how do you feel about VR gaming?

Answer the poll and discuss!

i have a vr set i got for christmas last year
only used it 3 times and now its sitting under a pile of old computers in my closet XD
Same here. Got a rift with 3 sensors and it's not all that great. Using supersampling 2x ultra settings and still don't feel immersed. My brain doesn't get tricked and i just feel like i'm watching a screen in front of my eyes. Screen door effect is a bitch and that should be less on an oculus and it still as bothersome as can be.

I don't see it will go too far.

It will be revolution for porn and hentai industry though but for gaming industry? I doubt that.

I think it has yet to pass the hurdle between gimmick and essential feature, and there's a very long way to go until that point, if it ever happens.

Would love to see virtual reality become something like we see in Sword Art Online.

That would be revolutionary and amazing. Wish they didn't stop the premise of the first season and kept it going

This would be the best, but until we understand how to upload info to the brain we could have a decent MMORPG. Something that tracks your movements and your character uses skills based on them. I guess it hasn't been done yet because there's not many people with a headset that are interested in MMORPGs.

Did you ever see the movie 'gamer'? that has some kickass VR style gaming madness but one step more lol... worth a watch.

anyone remember 3d tv? yep same deal with VR.

rich kid toys and easy to forget in about 4-5 years.
Except they're nothing alike. 3DTV doesn't have 1:1 motion controls, and VR is not 3D. 3D are flat images popping out from a flat screen. VR produces images with true depth, IE stuff you can walk around, walk through, interact with, etc. I'll agree to some extent on the 'rich kids' thing, but really all it takes is one decent tax return.

There are several VR MMOs in development, a couple of which I believe you can play for free in the beta if you sign-up or e-mail the devs. I'm waiting for one that really blows me away, because right now all of the best content is single-player. Save perhaps Star Trek Bridge Crew.

OH, and Windlands 2, which looks like it'll be great. It's about flying around with dual grappling hooks like the first one, but the sequel adds multiplayer, weapons, and other cool shit:

So 50+% never tried VR and isn't interested! I think a better poll would've been have you tried an Oculus Rift or HTC Vive VR headset and how did you like it...

I'm honestly curious how many people there are in this thread that have never tried some form of VR (Phone VR doesn't count) that are commenting that it's a gimmick.

The vast majority on any website have never tried high-end VR, just based on sales numbers alone. It's really unfortunate, because Vive has been everything I wanted out of VR in the 80s/90s and then some. SteamVR now lets you customize your home "room," and you can visit rooms other people have created as well. Not to mention settings for TV shows, movies, etc. I was so happy walking around the Simpsons house for the first time.

I know I'm going to be floored all over again when my Pimax 8K HMD with dual 4K panels and 200 degree FoV shows up. Might do my first review on Temp for it.

well like i said before i've used vive and own an oculus with touch controllers and 3 sensors hooked up 2 a 1080 Ti so am using supersampling x2 and i don't see any future in it at the moment. The resolution is 2 low to even trick your brain and the screendoor effect on the vive and oculus doesn't help either.
Maybe other people do feel immersed but for me it just feels like i'm watching at a screen taped to my head. If there was no screendoor effect and a wider view with a higher resolution then maybe you'd feel like part of that world but at the moment it still feels like you're looking at a screen.

Even though it's technically on the lower end of the spectrum as far as VR headsets go I felt exactly the same way with the PS VR. Initially I didn't have high hopes for it thinking that it was going to be sort of like the powerglove of this generation, but I was thoroughly surprised. It exceeded my expectations by a TON. I'm actually surprised the technology is as good as it is. Head tracking is super sensitive and the graphics are great despite the lower resolution. It's as close to feeling in the game as you can get. It's so immersive it's easy to forget it's virtual.

Since getting the headset I've been showing it to as many people as I could just to see what their reaction would be like. Nobody complained and everyone's mind was blown.

Sony NEEDS to figure out a way to have more people demo VR because I think the majority are just writing it off like they did with 3DTVs despite this being COMPLETELY a different experience.

PSVR is surprisingly good for 1080p total resolution because of their sub-pixel layout. They just need to release next-gen motion controllers and trackers to complete the experience. Phone VR, OTOH, I wish never existed. It really muddies the waters and makes people believe that VR technology is shit. I blame Palmer Luckey and GearVR. Google did Cardboard, but at least most people know they shouldn't expect much out of that.

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
