I am American and on a US Wii, I have Monster Hunter Tri and was wondering if there were any risks involved in playing online or if it's even possible at all.

Not only is Monster Hunter Tri (well, atleast the Japanese version so far) pay-to-play, you also need a Japanese Wii Shop Channel or something like that.
