Hi everyone,

I heard someone saying / writing this somewhere.

But why is pirating films worse than for example pirating a game? Maybe there is a simple answer and I don't see it right now. Ideas?

- NO MORAL DISCUSSIONS NEEDED -

Thanks!

Lord spare me from yet another thread about the morality of piracy.

Maybe in this case 'worse' means more commonplace.
I do not want to go on the side of morality.

The question is more meant in the monetary way. Do people lose more money? And if so, why?

Please, NO MORAL DISCUSSIONS. Thanks.

Other then in your example there could be a real reason behind this claim, don't you think? ;)

Well for instance more people are associated in making a movie whilst one game could be made by a single person.

I think that's a bit backwards. A lot of big movies show up in theaters first, which is hard to get a decent pirated version at the time, then go to home media. Not only that, they'll generally get network deals. Normally, movies make their money back in theaters, so everything after is mostly pure profit. TV shows and Indie films I couldn't tell you, though.

Since I don't have some crappy cable service, I watch all my shows online (unless I can go out and get it on physical media) and I try to watch it from the network's website, so they get some benefit from me enjoying their content. That said, a lot of networks have adopted a pants-backwards model of requiring you to have a cable network subscription to watch full episodes on their sites. At that point, I'm perfectly happy just streaming it elsewhere.

As for games, they only really make money from direct new sales, maybe some rentals (I haven't really looked into game rentals in a long time, so I know little of it). I don't think piracy will drive developers or publishers out of the job, anymore. I mostly just see piracy as a mix of a service problem, an entitlement problem, and a financial problem.

Maybe it's because it's easier? Pirating games needs hacks/cracks/hard mods/soft mods etc whereas a simple video file will play on just about anything.

Let's say you don't have access to Netflix in the country you are, TV series take forever to be available legally for you to watch or you just can't afford.

Under these circumstances I'd say it's understandable to pirate it.

I've got Netflix but happen to pirate TV series because they come out weekly and I want to watch them as I follow them.

People think their own behaviour is ok, so it's likely that the person who wrote that doesn't pirate films but pirates games. We can all justify (aka make excuses) for our actions after the fact, but that is all it is. Legally and morally there is no difference.

Simple, hollywood's bitchier about movie piracy because they refuse to get with the times like the music industry during the napster/mp3 thing and the games industry before digital downloads and Steam.
When industries get scared, they lash out and blame everyone but themselves for their own errors in judgement.

The music industry was losing out to piracy and bitched about that like it was the end of days or something, and it's doing better now due to fairer (questionable) pricing and distribution, the same goes for games (pc especially) but Steam's all but cured that.

So Hollywood, get with the times. Not everyone lives near a cinema, and some of us don't want a fucking DVD/Bluray collection taking up space in a small residence when we can download everything else we want cheaply and easy, from games to books and music.

And regional prices and staggered release dates? Come the fuck on... Same day worldwide releases and fair prices across the board please guys.

Edit: Facebook film distribution seemed like a great idea, but barely anyone's done it, why?

I think it's worse to pirate games... so there, it's a wash. :)

I never pay for movies. That said I don't watch a lot of movies either, less than 10 a year.

Download a game, get a small letter on your door. Download a movie, get swat busting down your door and shoot everything in site. And throw your computer in a volcano.

Movies are easier to consume and more people are interested in them. If my sister wants me to watch a movie she liked, I can do it in the fixed time it takes to watch the movie. If she wants me to play a game, it can take hours, days, months, and sometimes years. The end result is that most pirates will pirate just movies. It's all about audience.

ID say it isn't. Sometimes I'll feel bad if I pirate a game, but I never give a shit if its a movie.
