Okay, now im wondering.

Is it possible to boot Pictochat and DS Dowload play from an R4 list/menu like a normal DS game?

I've tried woctochat. too complicated.

finally,
if this is considered a ROM request, please close this topic!

I never knew such an application existed, thanks for the initial question (and reply, obviously). Anything that saves the necessity of removing the cart from the slot-1 has got to be a good thing!
Pity it can't have the DS firmware recognise that there's a cart sitting in the slot-1, so one can simply select it & it boots up the carts firmware.

Nevertheless, it's still worthwhile.

I was also searching for this a while ago, and I came across Firmware.nds, its exactly the same, but in English.
Slight difference actually. firmware.nds is a dump of the firmware file, messed around with until it's in an executable *.nds format. Back2FW redirects you to your DS's actual firmware. You'll only notice a difference if you have a DS Lite, as firmware.nds doesn't have support for the extra brightness levels.

Also Back2FW doesn't work on flashed DS systems.

the back2fw.nds, can you go back to the r4 menu? it says there is no ds card inserted. i was wondering if it is possible for the r4 to show up in that area.

I think if the FW detect R4, it would boot R4 instantly (as always) and not let you access the FW menu.

No. I posted 2-3 comments back about it (I used an R4 to try it - but it doesn't matter what cart you use = same thing).

It's still worthwhile, because it saves you:
1. Turning off the DS
2. Taking out the R4 to use Download Play or Pictochat
3. Turning back on.
4. Turning off
5. Insert R4
6.Turn on

With "back2fw.nds all you do is:
1. Go back to R4 menu
2. Select the back2fw.nds (or you can even rename it and it still works), whilst leaving the R4 in
3. When you are finished Download Play, simply turn off DS and turn it back on

Hence, you don't remove the R4 constantly.

Did you read my post? G*d, I hope not.

My last attempt to make it simple:
1. If you don't use the back2fw, then you have to turn off the DS and remove the R4 to get to Download Play, etc.

2. If you do use the back2fw, then you simply run it from within the R4 and it takes you back to the Pictochat / Download Play screen. No need to turn off DS & remove R4.
When you're done with D/Play, etc. simply turn off & on to return to R4 OS.

Yes, it would be an added bonus if you could return to the R4 OS without having to turn off the console. But, I guess this must be impossible (as the whole premise of Download Play is that you do not have the game cart inserted).

Is that any clearer?

why not just take the cartidge out and boot the DS like normal? takes like 2 seconds. I do this all the time for Pictochat/Download play. I dont really see an advantage of doing it directly from within the R4 because that means you loaded R4 for some other reason.
