While they passed on attending E3, Nintendo will still be holding a major in-person gathering later this year. Focusing more on the fan experience, Nintendo has revealed the event as Nintendo Live, which will be taking place in Seattle, Washington this September. Previously, Nintendo Live events have taken place only in Japan, with this announcement marking the first time one will be taking place in the west. There will be gaming tournaments, stage performances, game booths, and more, with previous years having offered an Animal Crossing and Splatoon crossover concert and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe competitions with prizes.

“Fans of all ages can currently experience the unique games, characters and worlds of Nintendo on Nintendo Switch, but we want to expand that scope with a new experience,” said Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser. “With Nintendo Live 2023, we’re giving attendees a chance to celebrate together with family, friends and the broader Nintendo community in the spirit of fun and creating long-lasting memories.”

Does anyone know/think this is gonna replace the directs?

Maybe they'd sub this in for a Direct they would have otherwise done at that time. But it's not like they'll be doing these 3 or 4 times a year instead of Directs. There will still be Directs in general, I'm sure of that.

I think Nintendo will be announcing their new console at this event.

If the console is gonna release in Spring 2024 then I can see it. Not much more they can do with the switch and now feels like the right time for a new gen nintendo console.

It's a little harder to justify going cross-country for a fan expo, but I'm going to be in Portland around that same time, I think, so it could work out!

I'm pretty sure this event will coincide with PAX West in some way. Probably just held nearby on the same weekend rather than as an actual part of PAX West itself, but I'm sure Nintendo knows that PAX West is in Seattle in September and are just waiting for PAX to announce their dates so that they can announce theirs too. Then if it's a success they might do it again for PAX East in Boston in March
