Press Release
Detachable Controllers Reinvent Gaming

REDMOND, Wash.--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- In an introductory video released today, Nintendo provided the first glimpse of its new home gaming system and revealed that it is called Nintendo Switch. In addition to providing single and multiplayer thrills at home, the Nintendo Switch system also enables gamers to play the same title wherever, whenever and with whomever they choose. The mobility of a handheld is now added to the power of a home gaming system to enable unprecedented new video game play styles.

At home, Nintendo Switch rests in the Nintendo Switch Dock that connects the system to the TV and lets you play with family and friends in the comfort of your living room. By simply lifting Nintendo Switch from the dock, the system will instantly transition to portable mode, and the same great gaming experience that was being enjoyed at home now travels with you. The portability of Nintendo Switch is enhanced by its bright high-definition display. It brings the full home gaming system experience with you to the park, on an airplane, in a car, or to a friend’s apartment.

Gaming springs into action by removing detachable Joy-Con controllers from either side of Nintendo Switch. One player can use a Joy-Con controller in each hand; two players can each take one; or multiple Joy-Con can be employed by numerous people for a variety of gameplay options. They can easily click back into place or be slipped into a Joy-Con Grip accessory, mirroring a more traditional controller. Or, if preferred, the gamer can select an optional Nintendo Switch Pro Controller to use instead of the Joy-Con controllers. Furthermore, it is possible for numerous people to bring their Nintendo Switch systems together to enjoy local multiplayer face-to-face competition.

“Nintendo Switch allows gamers the freedom to play however they like,” said Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO, Nintendo of America. “It gives game developers new abilities to bring their creative visions to life by opening up the concept of gaming without boundaries.”

Developers can design their games supporting a variety of play styles, which gives gamers the freedom to choose an experience that best suits them. Some of the publishers, developers and middleware partners announcing support for Nintendo Switch are as follows:

No but IGN asked Nintendo a bunch of questions and they answered all of them except the touch screen one, and basically gave a we can't talk about that right now answer. Nothing in the video showed a touch screen though and considering it seems the consoles screen goes off when it is in the dock it would appear impossible to use the screen for touch features when it is docked and if that is the case what would be the point. Unless they let you pair a New 3DS or something to it for touchscreen? That would be a cool trick.
If they evaded it that probably means they have something special in plan (like 3DS pairing as you said) or they don't have it and they want to build up positive hype so they're not talking about it.

hmm that makes me confused as to why they put it in the video if it's not going to actually have it, oh well though, still cool that they'll at least have future titles for the Switch
I think they stated it that way so if they wanted to they could cancel it...

I'd say it's still a very good chance...

Judging by previous console announcements, does anyone have any idea if they will announce new games before the release of the hardware? I'd like to see what will be available for the Switch. That Mario game looked really nice too.
I think nobody answered you.
my memory is not the best for that, but I think when they revealed the Revolution to be "wii" they gave only the name. The games were revealed few days later (at E3?)
There's no big gaming conference soon, TGS was last month. So maybe they don't plan announcing games before next year, or they will make a nintendo direct just for Switch games?

They will announce games before the release, or nobody would want to buy one if there's nothing to play on it.
I just hope this time they WILL make proper advertising on TV, and everywhere they can. they did it for the Wii, but failed to do it correctly and enough for the WiiU. Nobody knew about it. Their marketing department is really bad.

2. Now what happens when you drop your tablet/console... Oh no! You just broke your CONSOLE. Sure you can buy a case, but no case will fit in the TV dock, so that will sorta defeat the instant "switch" feature.

How many times does a fall honestly kill the device? Most of the time it's just the screen that cracks... in that case you'd just buy a new screen or continue to use the tablet as a non-switchable system...

If the base really has no internals beyond a USB hub what's also to stop third party manufacturers from making some kind of case with a larger base to accommodate?

/mind blown.

I'm having trouble digesting it all ... I'll have to watch it more slowly.
This could be a homerun. Certainly seems like a gutsy play.
Wow.

I just realized, it would make no sense for the Switch to have a second screen deal like the GamePad (as in something different on one of the screens) because when it's in the TV dock you couldn't use that screen, but a touchscreen would make sense for a portable component. That wouldn't allow inventory touch management unfortunately ( :( ) but you could still use touch on the go. This is all conjecture though, I don't have any clue and I don't think anyone does.

The only solution I can think of would be if they allow us to connect a Wii U gamepad to the system, I mean for example if it had no touch screen and they want to put a Mario Maker title in the game, they'd definitely need to allow us to connect our Wii U gamepad to build levels with if we have one.

Actually, that makes sense, the Wii U supports Wii Remotes for motion controls and Wii games so why not the Switch and the GamePad?

I didn't read any posts or read up on it, but since it functions similarly to a tablet with a controller, does this mean it's underpowered? A battery can't power a decent graphics card (or any), nor could one fit in such a slim device. Some people seem to think it will be able to do 4k60, so I assume this is also false...

It's using a Tegra SoC, so it's definitely not going to hit 4k60 in-game. At best maybe 1080p/60 docked, but 720p/60 in tablet mode.

EDIT: and the dock has no extra hardware, it's all in the tablet. So battery life will definitely be trash.

Yeah, and when you consider that they went and allowed GameCube controllers to connect to the Wii U, I'd say such a thing is certainly possible. I just wonder if they planned to allow that connectivity or not.

It would actually be really sweet if it had that kind of connectivity with the Wii U gamepad, 2 player games where each player gets their own screen could be done on the go as your gamepad would be tethered to the Switch and not the Wii U, so both screen become portable units. Think of a game like hyrule warriors or Pokken tournament or even 4 swords adventures where in 2 player mode, each player gets their own screen, they could do that with lots of games on the go.

hmm...no touch screen or motion controls it appears. A clean slate. Ah well.

Hacked Wii U and 3ds means we've got access to all the current consoles down completely....except the n64 lolol
