You can't play online if you're not on the latest firmware. Automatic Software Downloads refers to game updates, not system updates. The DNS will block system updates.

I'm on the latest firmware. Accessing the eshop, or playing Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 gives me an "error code 2124-8007."
