Good morning! I am posting in this forum because I am looking for a program that will allow me to modify and edit .sav files for Nintendo DS. Where can I find such a program? Or are they only specific to certain games?

The reason I ask is because I have a copy of Mega Man Star Force DX, which is a patched/modified version of Mega Man Star Force: Pegasus (USA version, since this is the only version of the Star Force ROM that the DX patch will work with), and since the patched ROM won't recognize the cheats, I figured my only chance was to mod the save file.

If this is even possible, how do I tell what is what? I have a hex editor program on my laptop, as well as the save file for the patched ROM. I would just like to know how to identify what values I need to modify: health, and money (Zenny).

There is no generic save file editor. Don't know if the megaman set would have created one, though it is quite possible as it is one of the more popular franchises among hackers. If not then you are in for a fairly involved hack -- anything that is generic to a system tends to be either some devs took it upon themselves to hack each and every game, or it is for newer stuff where the system handles the save protection, however on the DS ever dev was left to their own devices which means you get to figure out the hashing method used by the checksum, or bypass it.

On cheats. Do check the header of the game/whatever cheat programs use to determine game -- sometimes ROM hackers will intentionally or unintentionally break the header value that the cheat engines tend to use to determine what game is loaded. Sometimes this is for good reason as some cheats will no longer work, but most times health and money will be in similar places.
Alternatively you can make cheats quite happily. https://web.archive.org/web/20080309104350/http://etk.scener.org/?op=tutorial is for the GBA but is the same as most other consoles or even PC games. https://doc.kodewerx.org/hacking_nds.html covers how DS codes are organised.
