ROM Hack  Updated

Metal Gear Solid 2 & 3 60 FPS patches

Patches are for:
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
    TID: 0100A4301AA0C001 (Launcher TID: 0100A4301AA0C000)
    BID: FA8A6B3A9E27FD33 (version 1.5.0)
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
    TID: 010047F01AA10001 (Launcher TID: 010047F01AA10000)
    BID: BAFD3A1CA57EEAA9 (version 1.5.0)
IPS patches are recommended over cheats because they unlock triple buffering, which helps with performance.
Gameplay speed is tied to framerate, so if game doesn't reach 60 FPS gameplay is slowdowned.

To install any of those patches, download zip from attachments for your game, unpack zip and copy "exefs_patches" folder to "atmosphere" folder on Switch sdcard, accepting any popup.
Until I will figure out where game speed is stored, I will not upload patch for FPSLocker Warehouse.

So I beat mgs2 at 60 fps overlocked to the max on erista hardware. Mgs 3 will crash when entering a new area with overclock. Ngl it’s been pretty annoying to turn off my Overclock to enter a new area. But if this is the only way to play the game at 60 fps on the switch so be it, once again Ty for the mod
Sounds good, were there any noticeable drops other than the Intro mission?

Thanks for this!
Could you share the values you are modifiying to make the game run at 60 fps? I would like to port it to the PSVITA version.

Thank you for posting these! Much appreciation
I tried them at 60FPS and working well, would the Game Speed setting you mentioned allow FPS to drop as needed to maintain game speed at 100%? Im blown away the dev's dont have this running at 60FPS natively, i presume its down to inefficiently coded emulation?

2 and 3 are not emulated. In case of MGS2 they screwed sleeping schedule somewhere, so hardware is underutilized in most graphics intensive scenes (getting 45-50 FPS while GPU/CPU/RAM are not utilized fully). For such old games they are doing too much RAM transactions. MGS 2 prologue cutscene at 60 FPS is the most RAM intensive scene in all games I have found without any graphics changed (Load peaks at 70% of 1996 MHz).

Sounds like they should be employing you to help them improve their ports :) - Thanks for the info, will keep an eye how things progress. The main huge slowdown was when outside on the ship in the rain and also inside when there's the 100 marines doing their drills, especially going down the ladders. Otherwise, slick!

Thank you so much for your awesome work. I'm having an issue running the mgs2 60 fps patch, I followed the instructions like you posted but in mgs 2 I get this cheats for infinite ammo and not 60 fps. The 60 fps works fine in mgs3, but not in mgs2. Sorry for the noob question 🙏

has this patch been updated to fix the crashing in mgs3? I really liked using it on mgs2 but the crashing in mgs3 made me delete it and been waiting on it to be hopefully fixed.

Waiting for something that nobody reported to me yet? Only reports are about crashing when CPU/RAM OC is applied, but that sounds more like their setup sucks (f.e. using 4IFIR). MGS2 and 3 are one of the most RAM intensive games out there and at 60 FPS they show how really stable your settings and bins are. Though MGS3 is more about spikes while MGS2 is more about post effects.

Great work, though there's some pretty significant slowdown in some outdoor areas in MGS2, and I'm on erista switch and wondering if there's any kind of overclocking that will buff these sections out. I'm reading above that the biggest bottleneck is RAM, and I know overclocking RAM carries some risks. Just wondering if there's a safe overclock setting someone has tried already.

RAM does hugely help in certain games but this collection isn't one of those. But if you want to try it yourself you can safely use the 1882 MHz setting. You need a different version of sysclk for that though. For example sysclk uncapped or oc suite

i finished MGS2 and it runs almost locked 60FPS with the overclock at the max settings GPU,CPU and RAM), like 85% of the game, my recommendation, change the thermal paste for a new one, that helps with the high temperature.
About MGS3, well, i had fps drops at the beginning of the game, at the forest, and going through the bridge is worst with exactly the same OC that i used with MGS2, but is pretty good to play it.
i really appreciate the effort that @masagrator did with FPSPatch, thanks and keep working !
