The GBA contained a GB/C CPU for backwards compatibility, but it was not used by GBA games.
When the DS came out, it removed this CPU.

Technically not quite true, there are a few GBA games that use the GB compatibility chip for music, Street fighter Alpha 3 at least did, to save rom space.

The GBZ80 is completely inaccessible in GBA mode and was in fact removed in the DS.
However, the 4 GB/C audio channels remained accessible and were commonly used in many GBA games. I believe they were also used on the DS, but that could do much better software audio mixing.

For someone with a DSTwo or other DS mode flash cart, I recommend the GBARunner2. It's "a GBA hypervisor for DS. (like Nintendont for GC on Wii)". It can't save yet, but it has been running most games in playable states.

It's not really usable yet, but definitely watch this space. I have a 3-in-1 so I don't need to use GBARunner2, but it's definitely an interesting curiosity that I want to see mature.
