So I bought a new laser for about $10 and now the ps2 is reading my esr backups fine (glad I didn't toss them when they wouldn't work originally)

I got hdloader working from the USB with a shortcut to launch it, seems to work fine.

I want to try opl too, is there a good guide for that somewhere? since the PS2 doesn't have wifi it may not be the best solution. I think I can connect it a laptop though right? What about connecting to a ps3 or something (mine is not modded). My router is not close by the ps2 so what options are there?
Hd Loader usage from USB? You mean launching the Elf right? As for ps2 not having WIFI yeah it doesn't, remember this thing came in out in 2000 and can use/uses (Back then was Best hardware they had) IDE hdd. As for router not being close that's fine, I know you can connect it to laptop (and have that connected). For OPL it's pretty easy to use, similar to hd loader. For installing games on internal hdd same format as HD Loader. For usb or SMB (external hdd) you need to install your games using usb util2.0 . For great tutorials you can check these:

Well try the above links, they should help you out greatly. As for playing on SMB I'm not that good but I have some contacts you can contact in case of more assistance
