How to fix Online game services on <=10.7 emuNAND

This is mainly for N3DS rxTools users and frequent 9.0-9.2 sysNAND users.

So recently Nintendo decided to pull a maintenance run that effectively stops you from playing online game services like Pokemon ORASXY, Smash and a few others unless you update your system. This tutorial will help you bypass the check and get your online services back, however it will require that you have:
  • A 3DS system with 9.0-9.2 & CFW installed. (Preferably unlinked NANDs.)
    • Alternatively you can use this on 9.3-10.7 & a hax entrypoint using the NASA CIA installer. *WARNING! This method of installation will no longer work on 11.0 and above until a Kernel exploit is found for those updates*
  • A CIA installer (FBI, BBM, ect.)
  • 3DSNUS (Which will be linked here.)
Now, onto the steps:
  1. Optional but recommended: Before any of this you should always back up your NAND. It stands to reason that at some point during exploiting your console that you will have backed it up, but it's best to do so again now so you can restore quickly if something goes awry.
  2. Open up 3DSNUS and input the friends system-module Title ID and Version which is the only one you'll need. (Of which you can find the required one for O3DS here and N3DS here. Select the first link in the "Report" box of your region e.g "E" is USA. "P" is EUR.) Make sure you remove the "v" from the version number and "Pack as .CIA" is checked, then download the file.
  3. Now, take the downloaded .cia from the root of your 3DSNUS folder and drop it into where you keep your .CIAs on your SD card. Or if you're lazy you can just throw it into the root of the SD card, but better neat than messy with these things. :P
  4. Pop your SD card into your 3DS system and boot up your CFW by the method of your choice. Go into the .cia installer of your choosing and locate the .cia. Depending on what installer you use, you'll have to choose the equivalent of system or NAND to install the .cia if it doesn't automatically, as SD Card won't work. For FBI, make sure it's set to NAND for install.
  5. Once that's done, exit out of the .cia installer, reset your 3DS, open up the CFW again and hop into the affected game. Try out the online services and it should work. Congratulations!
  6. Optional: Should your game still not work correctly even after this, it most likely requires the latest NVER (named New3DS NVER in the N3DS) to function. Repeat steps 2-4 but instead download the latest NVER (which can be found in their respective console versions for the above linked system update in step 2.) *If you can't find NVER in the latest firmware list then use this list and check each update before it until you find NVER*
You can do this as well in sysNAND but please be careful as making franken-firmwares on sysNAND could lead to problems down the line (unless you have a NAND hardmod,) and make sure you've got a backup of your NAND before doing this. At any rate I'm fairly confident this will not brick your system, however I am not responsible if it does brick.

Thanks for this tutorial and it's information go to:
  • @Sgt. Lulz for pointing this out.
  • @Sheimi for testing this and confirming it alongside my own results.
  • @Pixel Eater for providing a link to N3DS 10.5 files for N3DS users.
  • @Domukuro Wolfield for reporting that the 10.5 friend system module has been patched.
  • @cvskid for keeping me up to date on the latest firmware since 11.1.

Quick question: Can me and my friend use this without cfw? We have gateway and unlinked sysnand and 10.3e emunand.
Unless emunand is a cfw, in that case, i'm stupid and you have all the rights to tell me

I was gonna write you are stupid and I have the right to tell you.. but Emunand isn't necessarily CFW so ya. Emunand just runs with CFW. Emunand is basically the nand read from SD, whereas sysnand (or just NAND for unmodified systems) is read from the flash chip.

CFW (CustomFirmWare) are er... don't really know the right term but they boots 3DS into emunand on a customized firmware. Primarily the disabling of signature checks. The 3 main common CFW's are RxTools, ReiNAND and CakesFW. Other CFW's are PastaFW (with the fork of miniPasta) and ReiNAND Mod (dubbed Aureinand by the users of it after the creator)

Definitions out of the way - If you are running any of the above mentioned CFW's to boot into Emunand then yes you can install this with FBI. Make sure you use FBI though, because of the whole installing into NAND thing (make sure you press L once in FBI so on the top screen it says "destination: NAND")

I too may be wrong slightly on the definition btw but they'll give a good idea still probably

Thanks for enlighten me. Could I ask you one more question?
So, I don't think we have any CFW. I access emunand via menuhax, while my friend uses the ds exploit method.
Can we still do this, or do we necessarily need a cfw?
you can't do that. you use menuhax to trigger the entrypoint to boot cfw. look at your SD card and you'll undoubtedly see a folder called either Rei, RxTools or Cakes (i think.. or Cake). That's what you have. So yes you ARE using cfw because you cannot access emunand without...

to a certain extend. someone really technical undoubtedly could

Err... Nope. I don't have neither of those.
Unless you mean the Gateway as the cfw!
I did follow this guide so I wouldn't have everytime to boot the gateway thru the homebrew channel...

yes Gateway is your CFW then essentially.
Hey, I just now saw your message. So, me and my friend tried doing it anyway, and while it worked for him, it din't for me.
Why? I mean, what the hell... It is because I've installed the cia with devmenu instead of FBI? My friend used that...

Use FBI and make sure it is set to "destination: NAND" instead of SD

Nope, still doesn't work. Dunno why. I did everything as the guide said...
Gives me 002-0123 error. Strangest thing is, before it just told me I had to update my fw...
Oh.. well.. Make sure you also install the NVER of 10.5 (same site, same page, different ID and different version) for your device (new3ds and your region, probably being EUR). That'll create a frankenfirmware (10.3.0-30) but it will likely allow you to go online.

Hey, now this is strange. So, right now, before going here and seeing your post, I've restored my emunand and re-did the whole process just for sh*t and giggles, and now... It works. Dunno how, dunno why, but now it works, except for one game that I changed the header and I've must done something wrong.
Soo... Thank you, I guess?

and in case it stops working again, I'll do what you said

For what it's worth (if you bought DSiWare stuff, mainly), you can also safely use eShop on sysNAND without using HANS, by installing the latest eShop (tiger) and using a CFW which loads at least the 9.6 FIRM. If you load SysNAND normally, eShop will not load but that's not a big deal (it wouldn't work anyway). You need to use Freemultipatcher to skip the update check.
On O3DS, you also need to install the "o3ds nfc module" (which didn't exist on 9.2) or else it won't launch.

It's helpful for those who are using rxTools on a New 3DS as they're stuck with 9.5 emuNAND (such as myself).
Get reinand my dude

I was tired and i think i botched my friends new 3ds. everything was great till i installed the friends module. I think what i did was install it to Nand and not emunands= nand.

my system was done right and works. but his seems to freeze when 3ds attempts to run friends service. and i try to launch cube ninja it won't boot. I have ctrbootmanager auto boot glitch but it gets stuck with white screen. i have a backup nand. any suggestions.

other than dont work on crap when tired. and it freezes without any sdcards in, btw

Just checked and worst case is I can unbrick it but then would have to have him wait for a downgrade if that would ever be a thing. We do have a nand backup, but I hear its pointless unless you hardmod

I have an old 3DSwith emunand on 10.3, and tried using this method rather than just updating, but FBI says the program already exists when I try to install the cia. Did I pick the wrong version of the friend list applet (v6144, the largest number listed on the site in the OP), or something?\

EDIT: Never mind, I think I got it from the wrong place :P

fixed the issue but it costed me 60 bucks. after finding a seller and rebuying.
