Hacking How do I use a R4?

Recently, I bought a R4i Gold 3DS Plus. It finally arrived a few days ago. Since then I've been trying to figure out to use it. I've put WoodR4 v1.64, and have been able to play .nds roms, but I still have questions like: do i need to update it somehow?, what do the settings do?, how do i use it?, What are other things I should put on it?, etc..
I'm new the flashcard scene, so please excuse my noob questions.

Nintendo didn't block DS flashcards since 7.1.0 so no update is required. Do you mean any specific settings? You seem to already know how to use it if you can play DS games. You can use it for homebrew and emulators, too.

In my R4's menu, there's a Tools option (which contains an Update, 3in1, and CRC32 options) and a 3DS Setup option that I don't know what they're for.

What are you trying to do? Put custom firmware on your 3ds? If so... did you move the switch on the inside of the card to N? Follow the 3ds guide site?

Update: you can update the kernel via wifi. Don't do it tho because last time I checked it wasn't the latest one.
3in1: for the GBA Slot 3in1 Expansion Pack, so only DS/DS Lite
CRC32: A checksum to check if your files are corrupt
3DS Setup: Installer for old MSet Exploit. only for version 4.x.x. Don't use it.
