OK.. I am using a hiksemi 32GB flash drive
Model HS-USB-M200R
Interface USB 2.0
Capacity 8GB/16GB/32GB/64GB
Maximum reading speed 15-30MB/s
Maximum write speed 3-15MB/s
Operating temperature -5~55℃
storage temperature -25~70℃

SORRY FOR THE LONG DISCUSSION IN ADVANCE
IF HIKSEMI IS A BAD FLASH DRIVE, PLEASE READ THE END NOTES INSTEAD AS I ASKED REGARDING OF BUYING AN SD CARD AND SUGGESTED IF THEY ARE GOOD.
THANK YOU

I have an 8gb flash drive with a reese's logo and luckily it works great but I want to upgrade and I had this hiksemi drive at hand without paying so why not

I am also using a microsoft windows 10 home single language for my computer

I also found similar but different problems found in this forum so I thought you all might be able to help

I was able to play my wii games in the flash drive before but when I plugged in the obscure things got haywire. either the obscure did it or the xenoblade or maybe the flash drive gave up on xenoblade.

I use a flash drive for the games, and the softmod files in a 2gb ridata sd card

I use my flash drive for wii dumped games for my console. Unfortunately, something occurred. Before I was experiencing this problem, I was able to transfer large files but when I transferred a new game, something finally happened, I was able to use 22GB of the storage but when I did this one, something happened. SHA-1 and MD5 Hashes failed and did not pass, I noticed that all my files as well, failed although before, they were alright and working but now it's not anymore.

I did follow a lot of steps to fix my flash drive, as of course, it got corrupted.

I did go to command prompt as an admin and did the chkdsk G: /f/ r/ x

I did reformat my flash drive and I didn't change the FAT32 to anything and made it as is as WII only support FAT32 disk format
I did /scannow in cmd

I did the diskpart solution in cmd

I reinstalled, update, and uninstalled drivers for the flash drives, and also the usb ports BUT!!! the flash drive, I wasn't able to look for its drivers online so what I only did try is the uninstall and update by searching automatically for drivers.

also did the properties and tried to scan and repair the drives

also uncheck the part where the usb port will turn off the device to save power

did go to control panel to power options to change in advanced settings to select usb to enable

switched to a different pc/ laptop to see if same problem occur and I also forgot to mention that there was an error 0x800701B1

although I did fix to reformat it and it didn't occur again but will likely happen again if I transfer large files.

I did try to add one game which has 300+ mb and it worked but when I add like a gigabyte sized game, stuff became a problem again

and also my flash drive will disconnect randomly or right away while transferring a large file.

I even scanned the flash drive using the windows virus protection to see if I got malware and luckily no malware.

but unluckily, still the same problem.

I am feeling frustrated with this and I have only a few Ideas left. Either the flash drive can't handle wii games or in the .wbfs file format and damaged it, OR I am completely a goner and I won't be able to use it anymore for large files which is a bummer as most files that I have and require are large

(I DON'T NEED TO RECOVER THE FILES AS I HAVE BACKUPS)

ALSO JUST WANTED TO ADD 2 THINGS as I was planning on buying sd/micro sd as I dont have the money for ssd/hdd/external hard drive,
can I use Sandisk Ultra Micro SDHC 32GB while using a kingston adapter to sd card or a usb adapter or does it have problems
1701708135893.png

and this other one I really wanted to buy but not really sure as the compatibility list
preferably, should I buy the Sandisk Ultra SDHC Class 10 UHS-I 32GB Memory Card
and I also wonder if i should get the 64gb instead of the 32gb of this, I'm scared that It might fail
1701708554107.png

This is not my first rodeo with a flash drive that won't work but I've had enough so I had to ask :(

P.S. MY WII IS NOT THE PROBLEM AS THE GAMES WORK WHEN SHA-1 and MD5 pass in wii backup manager

Universal mass storage driver is part of Microsoft Windows since ME (Millennium Edition) and 2000. You don't need specific drivers for USB sticks (that was for Windows 98 and universal driver can be added there… but I doubt you are working with Windows 98).

and also my flash drive will disconnect randomly or right away while transferring a large file.
That sounds like the flash drive is simply defective. Sometimes they overheat for no reason when copying a lot of data.

I've had so many USB thumb drives go bad for no reason. Examples:
  • Lying in the drawer… six months later: Data corrupted
  • Copying system image from a Windows 98 machine lately → corrupted – had to reformat
  • Plugged in a stick a day after last successful usage → No reaction. Dead as a dried fish on land.
These things are not reliable. Replace it. There is nothing software like diskpart, chkdsk, format can do when the hardware craps out.

I even scanned the flash drive using the windows virus protection to see if I got malware and luckily no malware.
Again: Does not sound like a software issue or something malware would cause.

Be warned that you will trigger the eternal "Use a classic HDD" discussion when talking about the Wii and flash drives. In fact you should at least try using a 3.5" HDD with own power supply. Flash drives on the Wii are a hit and miss. Either it works… or it doesn't (no chance starting any game or frequent crashes or corruption when writing to the stick from the Wii).

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks for your reply, and yeah in reality I would preferably have an HDD although, I seem to not have enough budget for that so might I ask,

would an sd card suffice?? despite the fact of the obvious choice that hdd would be better for real, would the Sandisk Ultra SDHC Class 10 UHS-I 32GB Memory Card still be a good choice or if you have any recommendations? I mean I would love to buy an hdd but sadly I am not yet financially able to buy one yet..

EDIT: I almost thought of buying a sandisk cruzer blade but got scared and obivously, usb drives tend to be bad so I was thinking of buying an sd card instead while saving enough for an upgrade to HDD

I don't see why it wouldn't (for both SD slot & USB2 adapter). Mine works with up to 512gb. Just buy them from a reputable outlet.
You'll find that it's more stable with faster transfers. But, I use Samsung evo+ SDXC.

You can also try to use the slow format. Yeah, ZZzzz, but it may just prepare the format a little better. BTW - How old is it ?

If so, do you know any third party software that I might be able to use to format a 64gb sd card to fat32? as I don't know if my pc would suggest such format FOR the SD card but I do know that flash drives do so ... Yeah, do you know any third party software to format an sd card to fat32?

Generally, no-name/unknown brand name cards have firmware issues (not the memory chip, but the controller on the board, which is used to communicate with the host from one side, and do the i/o with the memory chip on the other. It means if when, for some reason, the firmware on the controller got corrupted, the drive fails to read (sometimes it becomes locked read-only). It is possible to recover the drive (not the data) by re-flashing the firmware (which requires a lot of digging in the internet, knowing controller's name model/version, etc)... For myself I've found Samsung SD cards very reliable with low failure rate. However, one just needs to try other cards to find one, which suits best.

Firmware of an SD card? Really? Or do you mean USB flash sticks? I'd really like to know more about this. (Not that I'd ever consider trusting an SD or a flash stick that corrupted or made trouble – I consider them almost as a disposable).

As I stated - Get a micro SD to USB2 adapter. You can use your micro SD in both, USB2 adapter & the usual SD adapter.
Flash drives are great on a PC, but erratic with the Wii & other USB gadgets.

Formatting - Use Fat32GUI formatter (use USB adapter with micro SD).
Just double check that the clusters are 32k (after formatting). It sometimes has a tendency to do it as 16k clusters.

Do buy good ones, with reputable names/brands. Stay away from cheap ebay prices. They are usually fakes. They look like the real deal, but it will bite you in the ass.

Well, SD card is still a combination of some sort of microcontroller and memory of certain type. It just might be like 2-in-1. And it may not have serviceable functionality (like updating firmware, if not supported otherwise). Just an example - see https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/pls/ (Physical Layer Simplified Specification v9.10, page 13). It has a CIC (Card Interface Controller), other stuff, and a memory cell block/array (through the MCI - Memory Core Interface). So it has some firmware. At least the card should be able to identify itself, tell its capabilities, etc...

But in general, I haven't had a chance to re-program the firmware of SD cards. If SD card dies - it just dies. Time spent on trying to recover the card compared to SD card's price (sometimes requiring removing protection layer from the surface, finding proper spots to solder.. never done it, seen how other do it to recover the data - the data should be really worth it)... you know :). USB sticks are easier to recover... So I've just selected a brand (Samsung), which I use for my projects, running in BeagleBone/Rpi... which works fine.

@KleinesSinchen,
Oh, and yes, backups, backups, backups... More backups for the god of backups :) Preferrably using two different storage types.

True, true.

The best example is when you get a fake size ones. The manipulation of size to fool folks can be recovered (most of the time), but you would only get the original storage size, & not the fake size BS.

What the f…? More than 400 pages document looking even more complex than the ECMA specifications for CDs→:wtf:

Maybe data recovery specialists have something to go as far as dismantling and trying to solder somewhere on a µSD… but again: If the data in question is THAT important you would be willing to pay $$$$ for recovery:

Impressive. But... just backup your data so you don't need that service.
=====

Off-topic: The SD specification you linked above reminded me on the rarely used password function every SD has. Some Nokia phones made use of it. Otherwise it is only used in anti-consumer manner (cars/GPS).

Normal computers/SD readers/Android phones don't even detect a password protected SD.
That and the "go read-only" command is reason enough to dive a bit deeper into the SD topic. There is something called SD Locker 2 demonstrating these functions.

I forgot to update, so yeah last month after christmas, I got a Sandisk Ultra SDHC Class 10 UHS-I 64GB Memory Card. It works great and I got lots of games now, and also considering of using emunand for wiiware games on my 2gb riidata sd card.

I also learned that if my usb loader gx is not showing any of my games despite showing up before, including new ones that have been added, just replace the app's files with the same copy from last time you downloaded your usbloader gx from and remount the sd card and boom it shows up again fixed and gladly not a cause of a corrupted game file.
