This thread is completely outdated also the files used aren't longer hosted on my gdrive you should follow a newer guide since I left the wiiu scene a long time ago and don't even own a wiiu anymore

Here is a new updated guide to Softmod your Wii U.

First of all: be patient, read the complete guide, and follow it step by step.
I Recommend to read one step completely before doing anything on that step.

Read #1 complete, then execute #1
Read #2 complete, then execute #2
...

This guide will cover.
  • Getting homebrew working. (Haxchi or BrowserHax)
  • Getting a CFW. (Mocha or CBHC)
  • Installing stuff with Wupinstaller

What will be added Later?

  • Loadiine
  • Brazilian Exploit (USB Loading)
  • vWii Stuff
  • Saviine
  • and other Hombrew

What I will not cover in this guide.

REDNAND because there's no point to use REDNAND at the moment.

What do you need?
  • A Wii U updated to 5.5.1
  • An SD card. Best would be a Class 10 SD card, but a micro SD with an SD adapter will also work.
  • A PC that's able to Read an SD card.
  • Time
  • An internet connection on your Wii U or a way to self host your exploit (Android smartphone or a PC)
  • A brain and the ability to read and follow this guide step by step.

If you're missing one of the requirements listed above, leave this guide.
If you got all the necessary stuff, welcome to my guide.

Getting your Wii U prepared

#1 Unplug anything connected to your Wii U USB! This is only needed for optional steps on this guide, but for now unplug it.

#2 Block your Wii U from getting updates.

I only cover 3 Methods of Blocking Updates on your Wii U!

Method 1: Blocking updates via DNS
This is a fast and easy to use method to block DNS.
  1. On your PC go to http://loadiine.ovh/gate.php and check the DNS server on the Main page.
  2. On your Wii U go to "System Settings"
  3. Select "Internet"
  4. Select "Connect to the Internet"
  5. If you already have a Connection Press X.
  6. Select you default connection.
  7. Select "Change Settings"
  8. Navigate to the DNS Section
  9. Select "Do not Auto-Obtain"
  10. Punch in any IP listed on http://loadiine.ovh/gate.php as your Main DNS.
  11. Set the alternate DNS to a second ip listed on that Site or set it to 127.000.000.001
  12. Hit confirm and Press B to Save.

Method 2
Go to your router and block these URLs

nus.cdn.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
nus.cdn.shop.wii.com
nus.cdn.wup.shop.nintendo.net
nus.wup.shop.nintendo.net
nus.c.shop.nintendowifi.net
c.shop.nintendowifi.net
cbvc.cdn.nintendo.net
cbvc.nintendo.net

Method 3
Get rid of the internet connection of your Wii U! But do that later, we need the internet connection to be able to execute the exploits for now!

I personally recommend to use the second method.

If you want to be a bit more safe about updates i recommend to you to disable "Automatic Updates" on your Wii U. To do that follow these simple steps:
  • Go Back to "System settings".
  • Select "Internet".
  • Scroll down to "Automatic Updates" and select "Do not obtain".

#3 Prepare your SD card.
Download my starter package here. I will try to keep this updated, but you can update this by using the Homebrew App Store included in this package.
  1. Unzip it.
  2. Connect your SD card to the PC.
  3. Close all Windows Explorer windows.
  4. Open GuiFormat.
  5. Select the drive letter of your SD card.
  6. Set the Allocation Size Unit to 65536
  7. Name the card whatever you want.
  8. Make sure Quick Format is checked.
  9. And press Start. Once your SD is formatted exit the tool.
  10. Now copy everything inside the "TOSD" folder to the SD card.
  11. !!!!DON'T JUST PULL YOUR SD CARD OUT OF THE PC!!!!
  12. Click the "Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media" icon in the notification area.
  13. Get the SD into your Wii U.

Running Homebrew

#4 Launch Homebrew for the first time.
  1. Open your Wii U browser.
  2. Go to http://www.sthetix.net/wiiu/
  3. Click Homebrew Launcher.
  4. If everything went well you should be on the Homebrew Launcher now.
  5. If your Wii U freezes, hard reset by holding the power button on your Wii U until the console shuts down and try again.

Errors that might happen.

Wii U freezes at white screen.
Hard Reset your Wii U by holding the power button on the console, delete browser cookies and try again.

-3 -4 -5 error or fsmount failed
Shut down your Wii U, eject the SD card and reinsert, then try again.

Homebrew launcher.elf not found
You probably copied the "tosd" folder to your SD card and not the content of the folder.

Get rid of Browserhax if you want ;)

#4.1 HAXCHI
THIS STEP IS FULLY OPTIONAL BUT I WOULD RECOMMEND TO YOU TO DO THIS!
Haxchi removes the need to execute the unstable browser exploit over and over again to launch Homebrew.
  1. You need to have an NDS VC game from this list on your Wii U's internal memory. It has to be a legally purchased game from the eShop!
  2. You can get Brain Age for 7 bucks, but all other games on that list will just work the same way.
  3. If you followed this guide step by step and blocked the updates on your Wii U, you won't be able to enter the eShop but we have a simple solution for this.
  4. Select NNU-Patcher from your Homebrew and launch it.
  5. Your system menu will load and you're now able to enter the eShop in order to buy or download (if you have already gotten a supported game).
  6. If you have a supported game on your USB device, copy this game to the console's internal memory. Unplug your USB again. (You won't be able to play it anymore after Haxchi is installed, in order to restore a game, you have to re-download it.)
  7. Now go back to Homebrew.
  8. Launch the Haxchi.
  9. Read the onscreen Information
  10. Select the game for the exploit, press A and press A again.
  11. Once you've finished the installation, press HOME to go back to Homebrew.
  12. Press HOME again to go to the Mii Maker.
  13. Reboot your console.
  14. Launch Haxchi from your menu and you're back in Homebrew.
  15. If Haxchi is not working, reinstall the Game from the eShop and reinstall haxchi.

Getting a CFW

#5 Mocha/CBHC/HaxchiCFW

Method 1 Mocha CFW (only if youre not using Haxchi
  1. Boot Homebrew (WebExploit)
  2. Start Mocha
  3. Make sure you haven't selected REDNAND, DOUBLE CHECK THIS!
  4. Press A and you're now in a Patched CFW.
  5. You've now got all you need to do whatever you want on your Wii U!

Method 2 CBHC
  • THIS IS ONLY POSSIBLE IF YOU'VE INSTALLED HAXCHI.
  • THIS CAN BRICK YOUR WII U IF YOU ARE NOT FOLLOWING THIS GUIDE CORRECTLY.
  1. Move Haxchi away from your main screen, it's only visual but move it to the end of the system menu by just dragging it.
  2. Boot Homebrew, start CBHC.
  3. Read the onscreen instructions.
  4. Select the game that you've used to install Haxchi !DOUBLE CHECK, IT HAS TO BE THAT GAME STORED ON YOUR INTERNAL MEMORY OR YOUR WII U WILL BRICK!
  5. Press A.
  6. Press A to install CBHC.
  7. Reboot your Wii U.
  8. Your Wii U boots to a menu with a few options, it's Recommend to set auto boot to System Menu. To do this press down on the d-pad and move the arrow to auto boot and select system menu by pressing A.
  9. Navigate up to boot System Menu.
  10. Press A, you're now in patched System Menu.
  11. Your Wii U will auto boot a patched CFW from now on, you just need to power it on and enjoy ;).
BEWARE
DON'T MOVE THE EXPLOIT GAME TO USB
DON'T DELETE THE EXPLOIT GAME
DON'T REINSTALL HAXCHI
DON'T REINSTALL THE EXOLOIT GAME WITH WUPINSTALLER
DON'T DONT REINSTALL THE EXPLOIT GAME VIA E-SHOP
DON'T UPDATE YOUR WII U ONCE NINTENDO RELEASES A NEW UPDATE

BUT YOU SHOULDN'T BE ABLE TO DO ANYTHING OF THIS IF YOU FOLLOWED THIS
GUIDE. (CBHC HAS SECURITY PATCHES THAT WON'T ALLOW YOU DO DO THIS).

Method 3 HAXCHI CFW

  1. Boot the WIIU
  2. Run Haxchi while pressing and holding B (this will load acfw and bring you back to sysmenu
  3. Run haxchi as usual to go back to homebrew.

#6 Installing the Homebrew Channel Version (You don't need that if you use Haxchi without CBHC or if you use the browser exploit).

  1. Launch Homebrew using the browser exploit (Haxchi isnt working anymore).
  2. Boot Wupinstaller.
  3. Press right on the d-pad to mark /install/homebrew.
  4. press A to install the Channel to your homebrew.

This will now be your Channel to launch homebrews from the main Menu.

Links to Homebrew and tools used in this tutotial and a list of the creators of the Homebrews used in this guide will be added later this day.

ALSO ANY HELP WITH SPELLING AND GRAMMAR FOR BETTER UNDERSTANDING IS HIGHLY APPRECIATED VIA PERSONAL MESSAGE PLEASE KEEP THIS THREAD AS CLEAN AS POSSIBLE Thanks ;)

Thank you for this, very useful for someone like me who hasn't been paying close attention to the progress of the wii u scene... I have one question though, if I install the mocha CFW using the webExploit, will that be permanent?

hi and thanks for this.

I'm new to the forum which i ve already used for the vwii softmod which worked a treat.

i ve been trying your guide all night but never been able to even load the launcher.. after i click on homebrew launcher on the website pointed out, it keeps sending me back to a white page with wiiu written on the bottom right of the page.

i have a wii v5.5.1, i m using a class 10 SDXC card (64GB given that my wiiu is 32GB). nothing plugged into usb ports. blocked nintendo updates. the homebrew_launcher folder is under wiiu --> apps (i extracted everything inside tosd into the root of the sd card).

any idea on how many times the wiiu will freeze to that white page before it works? any workaround?

thanks.

you can try loadiine.ovh but change the box from homebrew launcher 1.4 to 1.3 since the 1.4 web exploit will frezze more often
also try to reset youre browser cookies

Could the fact that I didn't specifiy the allocation size unit be causing the issue?

No you leave the sd card as it is on my package and change this on the loadiine site
sn7qtMk.png

so keep the 1.4 loader on sd and just change loadiine.ovh to loader version 1.3

Uber noob here. I thought this was going to be a walk in the park, but it never is, not for me at least:rofl:. I'm running into problems at step #5, after running Mocha it takes me back to the main menu where I then try and load up Haxchi again. When I do that, instead of getting the homebrew menu all I get is an all black screen and an annoying static noise coming from the speakers. The system becomes unresponsive forcing me to hold power down on both the console and tablet. Anyone have any advice? I soft modded my old wii which seemed a lot more difficult than this method,I'm pretty good at following directions, but the Wii U is new territory for me. Thanks everyone!
