Nintendo's recent remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening received highly positive reviews and did well commercially, however, many fans weren't happy with the remake, citing bad performance and controversial stylistic choices. So, a fan has taken it upon themselves to create an authentic, improved Link's Awakening experience. A user going by the rather apt name "linksawakeningdxhd" dropped a complete remake of the game, built to run on PC. It features a ton of improvements on the original game, including widescreen, support for up to 120fps, and no area transitions. This last aspect allows for the entire map of Link's Awakening DX to act as one seamless area, to the point of being able to zoom the camera out to see the entirety of the game world all at once.

You can grab the game from itch.io, and watch the trailer made by the creator of the remake, which showcases the PC port in all its glory.

Dive into the enchanting world of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening DX as you've never experienced it before, with this meticulously crafted PC version that breathes new life into this classic adventure. Immerse yourself in the nostalgia of Koholint Island with enhanced graphics and widescreen support, bringing the charming landscapes and characters to vivid detail on your modern PC display. But that's not all – we've turbocharged the gameplay with high framerate support, ensuring that every sword swing, puzzle solve, and enemy encounter feels smoother and more responsive than ever. Rediscover the magic of this timeless Zelda title with improved performance, letting you explore dungeons, uncover secrets, and engage in epic battles with unparalleled fluidity.Whether you're a long-time fan of Link's Awakening or a newcomer to the series, this PC version offers a fresh take on the beloved classic, combining the essence of the original with cutting-edge enhancements. I love how people still think Nintendo where in the wrong this time when they had every right in the book. It's more or less a decompiled rom with all assets included.
Its when others actually work at bringing something new and better.

Nintendo hunt people down to shut them down, they want to prevent the world from seeing that nintendo cant be arsed at all, all they expect is its good old loyal fanboys keep handing money over for the same old recycled shit.

They make no efforts at actually updating or making anything better, then when others prove this, they get shut down.

Nintendo have always dictated what games can actually be played on its consoles, they will never support nor promote third parties and intentionally set out to restrict third parties so that they have full control over its consoles game market and ensuring their same old shit recycled first party games have no competition and maximise its game sales.

They get away acting like some corrupt government where they dictate exactly what you can and cannot do and be forced to do exactly as they dictate. I think China is it where they have no freedom to just browse online.... they're strictly dictated to in terms of what you are actually allowed to view online.

They chat so much shit and its devoted brainwashed fanboys bend over and defend them blindly and they're hilarious 🤣 as they're that desperate to defend them. Id say they are the worse breed of specimen you can come across online.

Piss funny when they contradict themselves whenever it pleases them.

This company that lies claiming it loves its fanbase and dedication, yet as soon as anyone tries showing their love and dedication by working on said Nintendo game and giving it some much needed love to make very impressive updates/features.

Nintendo spit their dummies out and have a massive tantrum because they despise anyone showing the world that these games can be far better, anything nintendo ever does has been proven by others it can be far better.

I wonder if any mirror download links were made of this before nintendo shut it down, be a very well deserved FUCK YOU to nintendo.

I mean come on, bad enough that all they do is recycle the same shit, the switch is by far the worse nintendo console that even they cant be arsed and get away with it because their loyal fanboys will still defend and hand over their money when nintendo port over its older titles.

Its always miles behind what everyone else is doing and giving to its gamers, like they've only just caught up and its utter bullshit premium subscription service is yet again giving you old shit ported over again, rather than something new..... and thats because its littered with utter shite indy games.

I will not read all of it.
But Japan got different laws than for example the US so they probably need to be more draconian. Still this isn't fair use under US copyright law.

If you don't like Nintendo. Don't play their games or buy their hardware. It is as simple as that.

Saying Fuck You etc won't do jack.

Japan's laws on piracy is more stricter than other countries in my opinion. They've put a ban on all cheat devices, the sale of hacked save files, and the distribution for piracy. That last part can be circumvented with a VPN, I suppose, but the rest applies.

Jesus, kid. This whole thing REALLY upset you huh? I can help you out with obtaining the game if it will make you feel better. All you had to do was ask someone for it.

Nintendo always was a great company up to the 3ds but than they changed their attitude from innovation to greed.
You pretty much nailed it.

I still don't understand this hate for Nintendo to the point people are getting mad at them for protecting their stuff.
See post above. Because Nintendo has become soulless, greedy and lazy and will come after anyone who shows hackers can do much better than them, while other companies like Sega or Capcom can give fan works recognition and sometimes even officially release them. Nintendo's reactions are completely disproportionate to the level of "threat" this kind of fan project really poses to their IPs (see post below). It would be so much smarter of Nintendo to tolerate them and even recognize fan works which deserve to be. Hacks like Super Mario Bros 3Mix or Super Mario Bros Special 35th Anniversary Edition should have been picked up and released officially. This can be seen as an investment : they allow some copyright infrigements that are negligible in terms of sales repercussions, but this is repaid by a better image in the fanbase, and officially released fan works can also generate money, etc. Nintendo are also hypocrites because they copied & pasted the SMW hacks bubble flower in Super Mario Wonder, thus acknoledging they need fan hacks to create new stuff while still hunting them down.

The overwhelmingly vast majority of people who purchase Nintendo products will have never heard of this fangame and will happily continue purchasing said products.
Case in point : so what does Nintendo have to gain by being greedy assholes shutting down every fan project ? Since the mainstream public won't hear about it, since emulation/hacking are very niche, it's not gonna hurt their sales. No one is gonna refrain from buying the Link's Awakening Switch remake because some obscure fanmade PC port is available. They're ruining their image to many fans for a few dollars, basically.

Its when others actually work at bringing something new and better.
Better according to who?
If the creator/owner (the only opinion that usually matters) thinks it's not better, then why shouldn't he complain?
And if he has the means, why wouldn't he sue?

Nintendo hunt people down to shut them down, they want to prevent the world from seeing that nintendo cant be arsed at all, all they expect is its good old loyal fanboys keep handing money over for the same old recycled shit.
Why is that a bad thing ?

They make no efforts at actually updating or making anything better, then when others prove this, they get shut down.
So, they're using their resources to do new things ... such a bad company.
And they're protecting their assets/IP from being used without permission... such a bad company.

Nintendo have always dictated what games can actually be played on its consoles
Not always, but controlling what can and cannot be played on their consoles is what gave Nintendo some quality games.

, they will never support nor promote third parties
Not true.

and intentionally set out to restrict third parties so that they have full control over its consoles game market
Don't see why is that a bad thing.
it works for their business model, so why would they change.
They ¿know? what THEY (¿it?) like, so why wouldn't THEY try to choose what kind of games are playd on THEIR consoles?

and ensuring their same old shit recycled first party games have no competition and maximise its game sales.
Bad, bad company, trying to make a profit.
They should become an ONG instead.

They get away acting like some corrupt government where they dictate exactly what you can and cannot do
This is just bs. ¿corrupt how?
It's their development, their IPs, their software... why is it considered 'bad' for them to decide what to do with THEIR devices?
Bad bad company, they devolp what they believe it's worth and protect their business model.

and be forced to do exactly as they dictate. I think China is it where they have no freedom to just browse online.... they're strictly dictated to in terms of what you are actually allowed to view online.
Really?
Comparing a company where you have the choice of buying their stuff or not with a country where you have no option at all?

They chat so much shit and its devoted brainwashed fanboys bend over and defend them blindly and they're hilarious 🤣 as they're that desperate to defend them.
Bad bad company.
They know their target, so bad bad company.

Id say they are the worse breed of specimen you can come across online.
Well, this post is kind of worse breed specimen.
Only poorer.

Piss funny when they contradict themselves whenever it pleases them.

This company that lies claiming it loves its fanbase and dedication, yet as soon as anyone tries showing their love and dedication by working on said Nintendo game and giving it some much needed love to make very impressive updates/features.
The complain is about someone using their IP without their consent.
Which I don't think it's criticable.
If I make/create something, I would like to have full control on how and where it is used.

Nintendo spit their dummies out and have a massive tantrum because they despise anyone showing the world that these games can be far better, anything nintendo ever does has been proven by others it can be far better.
Anything?
Really?
Just using this example (Link's Awakening) who else made it better on the original hardware?

I wonder if any mirror download links were made of this before nintendo shut it down, be a very well deserved FUCK YOU to nintendo.
Why?
There's copyright infringment, they're protecting their IP, why is that a bad thing?

I mean come on, bad enough that all they do is recycle the same shit, the switch is by far the worse nintendo console that even they cant be arsed and get away with it because their loyal fanboys will still defend and hand over their money when nintendo port over its older titles.
So business company protecting their business, such a bad thing.
Bad bad company.

Its always miles behind what everyone else is doing and giving to its gamers,
¿miles behind?
Like. .. how?

like they've only just caught up and its utter bullshit premium subscription service is yet again giving you old shit ported over again, rather than something new..... and thats because its littered with utter shite indy games.
So you don't care about their software, you don't like the games the create, you don't like the company...
Why are you here even here wasting time complaining about a company you don't like instead of buying and playing games you do like on other consoles?
(and if you do like their games, then something good they're doing)

P.D.: Probably I'll be told I'm a fanboy so all the arguments are not valid... whatever

Really though, I didn’t realize the release didn’t require the users own supplied rom and instead worked out of the box. There’s a valid reason for this being taken down.

The Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time RE ports are still up, right? Two of the most known Nintendo titles can still be ported to your platform of choice as long as you supply the goods. Had the creator of this project taken the same route (decompilation), I doubt there would be an issue.

These actually don't use Nintendo's code and require the ROM to work. They are a decompilations of the games. This was a remake that technically used Nintendo's IP to be made. The way copyright laws work is stupid and complicated but technically the decompilations don't break any laws when this one did break IP laws.

Zelda is also one of the oldest series. It's nice to see that you're working hard and I'm jealous. I've been playing games like this for a long time.

The remake of this on Switch was my first (and last) Zelda.

It's nice but... considering the remake exists, what's the point?
It's for those who love pixels/pixel art? Because the remake feels superior in every aspect.
Genuinely curious here.

Either way, the series's gameplay loop of constant backtracking, and the sheer repetitiveness of it, shunned me away from this franchise for good.
You mean the trading aspect? That's the only reason for backtracking in this game. And maybe some photo ops and secret seashells you can't access right away. (the seashell in the level 1 dungeon for example, can't be gotten until you acquire bombs)

It's human nature that requires some grind to be truly happy, it's about the perfect amount that is the challenge for developer and most game just err on having too much. Zelda game tend to be done right but it can always be too much for some people.

After reassessing my experience with the game, it's quite simple really.

You have to keep returning to locations you've been previously to look for secret passages.
Then it dawned on me: The combat aspect is way too simple, which can be a plus to some, but it's a complete turnoff to me.
Clearly, the focus is on exploration and enemy patterns, and that can only work for me with an engaging combat system, which is kinda hard in an adventure game over an RPG.

At least when backtracking in RPGs I feel like I'm still improving due to character experience/skill experience improvements, but that's not the case here.

This is the kind of game that looks fun to speedrun though.
