Hacking EZ-Flash IV and RTC

Hi, I've recently disassembled an EZ-Flash IV to check its components, and I noticed that, while official sources state that there is no RTC, there is a small battery that seems identical to those present in Pokémon R/S/E carts; is there another function on the flashcart that relies on this battery, or it's useless?

Battery is for saving. Cart saves to sram, then copies from sram to sd card the next time you turn on or use soft reset.

yeah, that's all the EZ4 patcher does, is fix games to run on SRAM (at least that's my understanding).
