Looked over the CNN article that was posted. I will admit, the proposed bill about "would require schools to publish curriculum publicly and allow parents to inspect books and reading materials made available in school libraries." doesn't sound too bad, (EDIT: To clarify, I'm only talking about what's stated in the quote I posted. Not any additional stuff beyond that. I only read the article itself, not following every single link.) simply because if I were a parent, I'd naturally take an interest in what my kid's learning. I have a younger brother who does homeschooling, and on occasion I'm asked to tutor him on topics like math. If he was in public school, it would be great to be able to see ahead of time what subjects and topics he'd be going through for the year. I mean, I'm good at math, but trigonometry is damn near Kryptonite for me. I'd love to know ahead of time when that's going to come up simply so I could bone up on the subject and be ready if he needed help.

As far as the "inspect books and reading materials made available in school libraries", that in itself is fine with me, but in my case that's also tempered with a very firmly-held belief against banning books/literature of any kind. Student wants to read about gender-affirmation or whatever? Go for it. They want to read Mein Kampf? Sure. Just make sure that the student is taught from the very beginning that a piece of writing only holds a single viewpoint, regardless of what that viewpoint is. Reading something isn't an issue, provided they can also have a mature discussion about the topic as well. The "Mein Kampf" example? That can spark a discussion on what caused those beliefs and allowed them to grow. Now there's an opening to discuss World War 1, and the results of the terms of the treaty that came about after that war.

But, Europe had one hell of a head start when it came to trying to dominate the world, and participating in slavery and human trafficking. It took us far fewer decades since our inception as a nation to abolish slavery than any other nation on the planet. Still wasn't fast enough, but we did it in just about a single century, which puts us in first place, all things considered.
