E3 2022 has been cancelled; ESA says event will return in 2023

One of the gaming industry's highly anticipated yearly events, E3, has once again been cancelled. Following some early rumours, the ESA has confirmed that this year's E3, which was scheduled to be an online showcase, has indeed been cancelled.

An exact reason has not been shared but is likely due to issues related to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. And it appears that the ESA is focusing its efforts to come back for a (likely) physical event in 2023. In a statement to IGN, the ESA confirmed that E3 will return in 2023 with "a reinvigorated showcase".

"We will devote all our energy and resources to delivering a revitalized physical and digital E3 experience next summer. Whether enjoyed from the show floor or your favorite devices, the 2023 showcase will bring the community, media, and industry back together in an all-new format and interactive experience," the ESA told IGN. "We look forward to presenting E3 to fans around the world live from Los Angeles in 2023."

Sad to see, this was like Christmas to me growing up
Right? E3 in the early to mid 2000s was epic. Recent years though? Not so much. Sad to see it canceled. Hopefully, next year will be a return to form and bring hype and excitement.

E3 is pointless in the digital age, any developer or studio can make a 30 minute presentation and post that shit on Youtube whenever they want.
It's like gaming magazines, you can get all that info online so the magazines had to go since they were behind the times
yea... but some people don't have the money to afford internet.
So their only way to get infos on video gaming is to travel to California (Iirc?) and buy a ticket for E3 :tpi:

I wouldn't be surprised if it peters out here in the next few years. ESA has struggled with it for a long time, and it was blatantly clear that the public passes was the swan song for it's eventual demise. I'll miss it, no doubt, especially since it would've given me an excuse to visit friends/family in LA.

first nintendo ditched e3 then sony so yeah e3 has been loosing a lot, and like many people say now devs can simply advertise their game on YouTube or twitter and get a higher reach than e3 even, so its not like its anything important right now.

To be fair I've grown kind of tired of presentations, big ones like E3 or really watching Nintendo Directs. So this isn't a major loss to me but it does mean we can't use the Brian image anymore, which is a loss for society.
