I say lol when I'm IMing people because it's like, common courtesy. You don't wanna just ignore what people are saying, so I say it just to acknowledge something, I guess.

I type LOL when something is actually slightly funny.

I can't remember the last time I have typed out those three letters to express my amusement.

I usually find myself typing "hahah" if I laugh a little bit (i.e. only one "ha" comes out of my mouth).

If something warrants a "ROFL", then I'll type "HAHAH" and I'll actually laugh "out loud". (For example: http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=h9o5_W6hn9k I really don't know why it's funny. Possibly because of the rage in his voice at the end.)
