Then why can't I convert videos like "movie.avi"?

Sorry for this late answer, but what i could imagine is that it is a part of the name of the pathstructure leading to your file which is not working.
Had this problem again today. therefore i came back here. And after trying all steps i posted here. i just renamed my file to xxx.avi. and all was fine.

I'm still using 1.0 stable.

i use dpg4x 2.3 and i prefere it over all its competitors

i'm usin the included dpg convertin tool from the moonshell package atm. it really seems gud, i already found a way to turn all video into high frame rate, fps and resolution installin codec packs for optimizin the conversion. since i tested all dpg convertin programs, i can cleary say that this is the best one.
