de_Fuse worked, and then stopped working?

hi! so, i have an old bad Hynix Wii U, and i wanted to fix it before the Wii U networks close so it could get a bit of last playtime out. unfortunately, it was alternating between flashing blue and solid blue but no HDMI output or Gamepad connection, so i bit the bullet and attempted to use de_Fuse because worst that can happen is the brick stays a brick, right?

anyway, i soldered everything up and accessed the Minute menu correctly, dumped a bunch of stuff and was able to boot it. Gamepad worked again, HDMI worked again, yay! there were some quirks such as it going back to the Minute menu every time we left System Settings and booting back into the Wii U after that causing the display to be weird until a hard reset was performed, but aside from that the Minute menu worked. didn't try to play any games yet other than Super Mario 64 VC, though.

then, while in System Settings for a while trying to get into a NNID account, the Wii U randomly turned off, and when i tried to turn it back on it gave me the blinking red light of doom. it could have overheated, given the motherboard was just sitting directly on a block of wood with no fan or anything, OR maybe something (perhaps my messy de_Fuse wiring) caused power to short.

i fully unplugged it, put some of its casing and its fan back, and gave it some time, and turned it on again... only for de_Fuse to not work anymore?? it tried to do its thing, failed, and then did a vanilla boot of the Wii U... which, mysteriously, successfully booted, with the Gamepad and HDMI output and all. unfortunately, though, the eMMC chip's failing 'cuz it's a Hynix Wii U and i got the good ol' 160-0103 error when i tried to run Splatoon, so it's not exactly, uh... fixed. and when i was on the 160-0103 error screen i saw a faint plume of pale smoke come off the Wii U so that's... scary, to say the least? is that normal?? nothing looked bad when i examined the motherboard again, but i also don't have a good eye for that.

de_Fuse's serial console says the SD card is the problem. i have no idea why that would be and said card looks fine on my computer.

anyway TL;DR i installed de_Fuse on my failing eMMC Wii U, it worked, then partway through it either overheated or shorted something and now even though it can boot normally (though failing bc bad memory) it can't boot into the Minute menu anymore. this could be the fault of my wiring/solder job being very amateur, idk.

If it boots to the error screen you don't need defuse. You can use the pico for UDPIH and install ISFShax and then rebuild your mlc on a SD card.

For defuse, flash the sdcard again and check if any of the wires came loose.

defuse wasn't originally installed for the memory error, it was to fix the blinking blue light, Gamepad error and lack of HDMI, which seems to have worked as far as i can tell X3 unfortunately i guess being able to see the screen again only gets you so far

i'm aware of UDPIH and ISFShax and may end up ultimately going for that to fix the memory errors, esp if i can't get defuse running again to set it up that way. definitely frightened me that defuse was working at first and then stopped after what i guess was an overheat, though O_O

Considering that you seeing smoke , perhaps we can measure the voltage to confirm that the SD card has a voltage supply. But if the voltage is abnormal, you usually get a blinking red light.
So it's just a proposal.

also, there WAS a blinking red light after the Wii U overheated and shut off the first time. i wasn't looking at it at the time, though, so i don't know if there was smoke.

when it had a memory error and started smoking, i had to unplug it to turn it off. i have not yet tried to turn it back on after that. i... probably SHOULD to make sure it still turns back on at all, actually, now that i think about it...

UPDATE: tried to turn my wii u back on, got stuck trying to defuse, couldn't access the serial console on my computer. turns out either some solder joints failed or wires snapped but i decided to just take defuse out. THANKFULLY the wii u powered on, connected to the gamepad, and output video just fine even without it so i'll probably try UDPIH once i have the stuff ready for it.
still defo anxious about the overheating incident and the smoke when that memory error happened, but as it is right now i dunno how to troubleshoot that. maybe if i'm lucky it'll just have been because of my messy wiring and so won't happen again... one can dream, right? XD
