Hardware Can You Watch Downloaded Movies on a PS3 or 4 for that matter?

Can this be done, or is there some sort of copy protection that makes something like a Raspberry Pi better for this purpose?

depends of the format I guess. Could be read right away in the video player in the XMB.

I used a PC program called Universal Media Server to play movie on my PS3.

You can go the UPnP route like SickPuppy or you can transcode your videos to a format that the PS3 supports. The PS3 cannot play MKV out of the box, but doesn't have problems with AVI.

So during the movie, assuming it is a supported format, it will not glitch out and tell you that you are playing a pirated copy or what ever. I have read that they do this when movies are played directly from a USB stick, regardless if you ripped and encoded them your self or what have you.

If the video is a format that the PS3 supports, then you can easily run downloaded movies and TV show episodes on it just fine without any antipiracy errors. All of my videos on my PS3 hard drive were downloaded from torrents, and I can easily watch them just fine.
