I heard from some people that their powersaves bricked their game, and said that even restoring from a backup does not solve the problem.

1. How does this happen?
2. And if it were to happen, how can you unbrick the game?
3. Is this still happening?
4. Can this happen if you are only using it to backup saves?

I am not sure about 3DS, but the DS version of Animal Crossing won't boot if you have corrupted save data. You can repair it by deleting save file (dongle, etc.).

It was certain games that use CARD2 card type that could be bricked.
Powersaves write to the wrong address, overwriting the ROM data in the NAND chip and bricks it.

If it can write to the ROM data, what's preventing someone from writing the ROM back?
