I spent a long time trying to figure out how to get wii virtual console and wiiware wads to play off my external hard-drive and finally managed to do it over the weekend.
With the help of this guide "How to SoftMod a Wii to Play Backup Wii, Gamecube and Wiiware Games"

The problem of the black screen seems to happen with NES, SNES, and other consoles from those gen. I'll load up the game, it will take a second and then go completely black to the point where my tv even says 'Unsupported Mode' or something like that. If I press the Home button on my wiimote it will actually show me the standard options that it normally would and will even show the loaded game in the background. From here I can go back to the Wii menu or go back into the game which will result in the black screen.

I've tried forcing NTSC but it didn't help, I'm fairly certain all the wads are NTSC or region free, and I'm running on a NTSC Wii. Wii virtual arcade works from what I've tested and so do the WiiWare games I've tested. I'm unsure if N64 virtual console games work since when I try to load them up it tells me I need a classic controller(despite having a gamecube controller plugged in). I'm not sure if I need a different workaround to play 64 games with a gamecube controller but that's a different issue.

I'm using a 2gb sandisk sd card in my wii and a seagate external hard drive that has my wads. Both are formatted in fat32.
I'm very new to this and am not too good with modding talk so please give me very specific directions if you want to help. I'll try to answer any questions asked as best I can.

Thank you for your time.

It's a weird issue with newer tvs - I've experienced the same issue on my 4k vizio. Have you tried using a different TV?

Wow nice! Thanks for that suggestion. Switched over to my CRT and now it at least tells me that I need a classic controller. I'm trying to go through every system to see if I hit any hiccups. Earlier I tried running a game and it started out by saying "Loading" then went to an all purple screen. Not sure which system but so far I can check master system, genesis, turbografx off the list. It might have been NeoGeo.

Slightly off topic, my wii isn't outputting any sound!? I picked it up second hand so I'm not sure if it was always like this or not. I tried 3 different cables(2 component, 1 composite) on 3 different tv's and yet I can't get any sound! Anyone run into this? Could it be a hardware problem or something that happened when I modded it? Sorry off thread topic I know

If the sound isn't working across multiple tvs with multiple cords - that definitely sounds like a hardware issue. If the sound is broken try to return your wii if possible.

Well that is definitely a bummer :/ I doubt I can do a return since it was on craigslist. I guess the only thing I can hope for is that nintendo still does fixes on these things, otherwise it's borderline useless!

New wiis can be bought for very cheap - much cheaper than a fix would be.

You can find them on ebay for like $40, probably cheaper other places. TBH it's not that bad that ninty doesn't fix these anymore because there is a glut of used wiis.

true, but money is money and I hate to find out I just wasted some. Sorry I feel like I'm abusing your knowledge in this thread.

Would you happen to know why I get "The Wii system memory has been damaged. Refer to the Wii operations manual for further instructions" message? From what it looks like I only get this message when trying to play NES games. Also any idea how to get all the games titles to show up in the usb loader gx menu? I loaded up missing files and got the box art but I still end up missing a bunch of files.

thankies

I wish you could get more info out of me, because my knowledge is limited.

I've never seen the error before. And as for the usb loader gx menu - maybe try reloading the cache if that's an option.

You helped with my main question of the thread so thank you! I'll do some searching about the game titles and the sound on the wii. Last question before I'm done with the thread, do you know of anyway to use a gamecube controller with virtual console titles like n64 for snes. I want to avoid having to buy a classic controller. thanks!

The virtual console titles support gc controllers natively. As long as you have a Wii with the GameCube ports.
