You never need worry about accidentally updating your system and getting locked out of hax.
You don't have to boot into any special modes - you just turn your 3DS on and go.
It's like owning an unhacked system ... only it's hacked. E.g. no worry about different game encryptions, playing online, using eShop, etc.
You can be free to install experimental stuff and if it causes problems you can restore a backup without a hardmod.
