A customized firmware would mean that it's a small modification over something already existing, as in Nintendo's existing 3DS firmware. Luma3DS is a set of customized firmware patches, not a custom firmware.

A custom firmware would mean that everything is created by a third part, from scratch. Instead of bits and pieces going over existing firmware.
No, that's not what custom firmware means. The term CFW was invented in the PSP days, and PSP CFW is definitely not created by a third party from scratch, it's just pre-patched, modified CFW. Other than being pre-patched as opposed to the 3DS' on-the-fly patching CFW, they work rather similarly.

It is. There isn't much "real" cfw that exists.
