Yeah - I pottered with that thought too - double sided (with mosfet on board etc) but ultimately decided that single sided was better in this instance rather than smaller.
fly2040 DS experiment:
Looks awesome @QuiTim !
You've inspired me to practice and give it at go at some point.
In the meantime first I have to see if I can replace a MAX77812 on a lite (first device I tried to mod) as I'm pretty sure that's why I have a BSOD/partial boot/no DRAM on that one. (All the others since...
Updates:
Release v1.0.0 is now on git.
A small batch of boards have been assembled and are available. (Though anyone can create if they want).
Some flex cables and leds are also available.
FYI/FWIW & for those that have been following my posts...
I've created a related thread for my fly2040 variant - as it has slightly modified firmware and has Atmosphere support (sysmodule & homebrew app).
Thought I'd share here as it's picofly based and picofly compatible (with extras)...

Taking the picofly firmware and hardware to the next level...
Announcing the fly2040 suite:
Enhanced picofly firmware to support led strip control.
sys-rgb sysmodule for system monitoring and dynamic led strip updates.
sys-rgb Manager for configuring the sysmodule settings...
@rehius Is the picofly toolbox derived from the hwfly toolbox? Are you planning to release the source code for this also?
I've come across an issue while trying to do an update - it seems the picofly toolbox has limited the update.bin size to less than 64Kb (it seems the "other" toolbox allows...
Personally I'd check soldering... Perhaps a reset line issue or a 3v3 line issue. Make sure that it's a good connection, that all flux has been cleaned (IPA) and there's no shorts.
So... Managed to get i2c comms working through Hekate. Hardware and firmware proven working.
ScriesM & CTCaer are helping me (a lot) to get i2c working from Atmosphere.
Sharing some progress on my WIP for picofly RGB bling... I'm planning to do a test install this weekend and will share some videos of the installed version once done.
Once fully tested I'll be putting everything up on git.

Nice to hear that someone is able to make use of my update to ums-loader. :)
For me - a DRAM check proved pointless - I started tinkering with other payloads to see if I could get the keys for my broken lite and any time I tried to do anything with DRAM it crashed - so I concluded it wasn't...
That'll totally work - you don't even need the capacitors (there's enough on the board). I just put the ldo in the USB cable... 5V & GND to 3.3V output.

There's a button on the board (boot) to force flashing mode (similar to other rp2040) boards. But with un programmed boards all you...
50mA is for sum of all IO pins:
"Maximum Total IOVDD current IOVDD_MAX 50 mA Sum of all current being sourced by GPIO and QSPI pins"
Depending on setting it should be limited to 12mA per pin.
Sure - you can pull more current from an IO - but it's beyond spec... it may be fine in the short term -...
Yep - you're right - the flex doesn't have a series resistor.
I wonder if they had one on the pcb?
TBH I haven't tested putting in a series resistor yet - but the theory is there that we may be stressing the GPIO which may lead to failures over time.
Perhaps someone with the right tools can...
1K is probably too big & may cause glitching issues.
For reference see: https://www.build-electronic-circuits.com/mosfet-gate-resistor/
For GPIO 12mA current @ 3.3V
- I'd try 300 ohms (275 ohms - 12mA) which should draw 11mA
My concern with the bare mosfet install is that we may be over-loading the output pin from the RP2040 which could cause internal damage to the IC.
General practice is to have a resistor in the gate drive line to limit the current drawn from GPIO.

Funnily - I just did the trinket mod on my V1... My RCM injector battery just did the expanding thing and so decided to make it internal.
Personally I prefer to stick with RCM on V1 - my sysnand is 6.2 and I don't want to touch OFW in any way.
