Gaming Will Nintendo allow rainway to happen?

Streaming to the switch will benefit the switch in certain regard but also prevent sales of some third party games such as say Doom, which runs best on pc. Or games that have completely different version like Minecraft which pc version is a year ahead at the least.

Not everyone has the fastest internet connections, so I don't think it'll impact sales much.

i never streamed games, but i think it really buggy to setup and actual play. i prefer game on console directly

Local network, not cloud gaming. A good switch can easily hit gigabit locally.

They probably will. Some people greatly overestimate the number of people that will use it and how they will use it. The world is way more mobile now days, and a lot of people don't even have a PC, but rather use their phone to get online. I would actually set it up and use it to play stuff in my backlog on Steam. However, I would buy new games on the Switch. I don't mind paying more to be able to play them anywhere.

If you're streaming in-home there's pretty much zero input lag with Shield. Streaming over wifi to another location is obviously gonna be a lot more bumpy. It would be a neat app to have, but I'd rarely use it. My Switch sits right next to my PC, after all.

Lag shouldn't matter regardless of how much or little there is (which really will depend entirely on your internet connections). Its simply a matter of whether or not Nintendo would be OK with such a program. And ultimately I'm thinking they wont allow it. I really want them to, but this is Nintendo, and they'd undeniably be aware of the kind of emulation such a thing would easily allow for, which would quickly turn them off of such a thing when it comes to their system, since if you know what you're doing, you'd easily be able to play any NES, SNES, GB, GBC, GBA, and even N64 games right from your Switch with such a program.

I want Rainway on the Switch, it'd be great for so many reasons. But I think Nintendo will view it as ultimately more harmful than it is helpful for them from a financial standpoint.

Honestly in 2017 I don't think it'd make any difference for them financially. Emulators are available not only on PC, but also on Android, iPhone, tablets, laptops, smartwatches, and probably smart fridges. People still trample over each other to get NES/SNES Classic regardless. And Switch.

Sure, but you're not acknowledging that the Switch almost certainly has some sort of Virtual Console service on the way. If such a service is a change from before where maybe its kind of a Netflix like service that you pay for monthly where you have access to all the classic games you like (Which honestly, I'm leaning heavily towards that being what the Switch VC service will end up being), then I'm inclined to believe that Nintendo really wouldn't want something like Rainway to drop to entirely negate the need for you to pay a monthly fee for their new Netflix-like VC service.

VC maybe, but I don't think it'll be a subscription service. Their online service with one free game a month is already a subscription, and services that give you access to multiple games for a monthly fee continue to be nearly as unpopular as they were in the past. People prefer to own their games locally, even if they're older games in digital form. Re-selling SNES games at $5 - $10 a pop is way more profitable anyway.

If I was Nintendo I'd be thinking, hang on we could create a similar feature and include it as part of our online subscription service and actually make a bit of money rather than let it be free.
That and the fact we don't even have a Netflix app yet makes the prospect unlikely.
I'd like to be wrong though.

Yes I'm aware that their online service will have a few free games a month now (They recently announced it was changed from 1 to 3 at the start). But those games are going to introduce new online play. This will be separate from the VC service obviously. I think Nintendo recognizes the kind of money they could make if they also offer a VC service where you have access to all available VC titles and just have to pay a fee every month, you could probably opt to combine your VC service with the online service for one monthly sum of around $20 or so. Not gonna lie, I'd pay for that in a heartbeat, and would keep paying it month after month. And it would also be such a great move that I wouldn't even bother to get emulators on my Switch should the system ever get hacked, so such an idea would really have a lot going to it. I'm sure long term, they'd end up making more money on the VC in this way over what they have been doing. We'll see, but given how long its been without any proper news on a VC on the system, I'm inclined to believe they're making some serious changes in how its been handled on the Wii, 3DS, and Wii U.

Sadly, I still stand by the thought that because of this, I really really doubt Rainway will be approved for the system, despite how much I really would love to see it allowed.

I doubt people would pick streamed content with input lag and possible buffering (on bad connections) over natively ran games.

That's outrageous pricing. Max would be $10 a month between the two services (online is $30 a year), and still nobody would buy it. Not sure why you think they'd want to turn Switch into a subscription-based device at this point or why you think a subscription doesn't have to compete against owning games/emulators. I don't necessarily think they'll approve Rainway, but I don't think they'll deny it for the reasons you're citing, either.

Well lets compare to other Netflix-like services we see on the Xbone and PS4. For Microsoft, the Xbox game pass is $10 a month. While for Sony, the PS Now service is $20 a month. (Keep in mind, the PS Now library is substantially larger than the Xbox game pass library, with both services only offering titles from 2 of their systems (their current one and the one before)). At $20 a month including your online access fee a month getting a selection of ideally hundreds of games spanning the NES through the Gamecube, and the GB through DS. Its actually a price right in line with what the competition is doing. And of course if you paid a yearly fee you'd get a discount just as Sony and Microsoft's offering allow for.

Why wouldn't I want this? Having access to all the best old school games without having to pay for each of them individually would be a dream come true, especially for a system like the Switch that you can bring with you anywhere. I'd be all over it and I know I'm not even close to alone, I've floated this idea on other message boards (and other threads here in the past) and overall people seem excited by such an idea.
