Hardware YLOD due to overheating only?

Recently bought a PS3 off eBay as spares, the seller specifically stated it turns on for about a minute before overheating and shutting off.

Just got it in the post and it's a full on YLOD. Just out of curiosity if the seller is to be believed could this just be extreme overheating in the couple of seconds after the console is turned on or if it shuts off with a yellow light ~3 seconds after turning on is it completely dead?

Going to try for a refund otherwise, the description was completely wrong.
