I remember reading a article a while ago about a proof of concept that showcased Wind Waker playing on the Wii U with a DualShock 3 controller (of all things) by
@crediar. There was even a Youtube showcasing it. I don't remember where I saw the article. It may even been on Wololo.net but I just don't remember.
If I remember correctly
@crediar never intended Nintendont to be anything more than a Proof of Concept.
Not true, he started it to create a software to run Gamecube games on Wii U (ala Dios Mios) but then he posted the source code online and said that he's busy with other projects and that he doesn't have any time to work on it, as for the Zelda game being played on Wii U it was the very first version of Nintendont being released to public, or so I heard (I didn't bother with it at the time because I don't like Zelda games, but I was interested in seeing this project continue).
I may be missing something but the source for DM is in the archive for it. I've compiled it myself before. It is a pain in the rear to track down the extra tools required to make it into an IOS, though.
Dios Mios (Lite) started off as an open source, the original creator made it only a proof of concept to show that the Nintendo Wii can run Gamecube games off a hard drive "in Mios mode" and posted a video of it on Youtube, the video caught people's attention for years but apparently nobody bothered to contact the guy, I remember those days, it was strictly forbidden to even ask in a forum if it's possible to run GC games off a USB device, asking such a question was like asking of you can run PS3 discs on your PS2, I've even witnessed people getting suspended for asking such a "dumb" question...
Anyhow, around 2011 a user by the name G0dlike contacted the guy and offered him to buy his source code, if memory served he bought it with 100$ or something then posted it online as an open source, from that point, a programmer known as Crediar, who was still not very known at the time, picked up the project and started developing it, he had difficulties getting it to read USB at first so he moved it to SD only being known as "Dios Mios Lite".
Early versions used Nintendo's official Mios being patched by installing a WAD into it, because of this it would require you to pack it somehow and create the WAD file, which was easier than it seems but was also a headache and could be risky if you didn't know what to do, it would also require you to install either one of two version, disc version and no disc version (earlier versions would force you to insert a disc in the drive but then he made an option no-disc version though it was unstable and most games would crash with it).
A few years later Crediar announced Dios Mios Lite v1.0, everybody was like "v1.0? What the...? We reached rev53 a long time ago" yeah, little did we know Crediar has re-wrote the whole thing and created his own version of Dios Mios Lite that would replace the official Mios made by Nintendo, this made it possible for him to post it online too, he also merged both disc and non-disc versions so now if you start a game it will check if there was a disc if not it will run the game regardless but it was always beneficial to use discs, I remember having an argument about this with GerbilSoft back in Sonic Retro because Sonic Gems Collection would require you to always have a disc if you want to switch from one game to another... Unless you hack through the game files and replace the needed .dol file, I asked Cyan if he could implement a "select dol file" option in USB Loader GX for Gamecube just like there is one for Wii games (I think it's gone now but back then there was an option for this) but he told me (and I quote) "Just put a damn disc in the drive!" oh man... Cyan.
Soon after he finally revealed a video titled "Dios Mios is back" showing off Melee running off a hard drive, soon after this he released it to public, while still keeping his modefied version exclusive (the open source was dated to the versions before 1.0 where it still used Nintendo's code), soon after Dios Mios Crediar posted a video showing off playing Mario Kart Arcade GP on Wii using a modefied version of Dios Mios, apparently he has shared it with some of his close friends but didn't share it online nor did he mention anything about planning on doing so.
Not long after, a version of that modefied version that runs both Mario Kart games was leaked on the internet, Crediar got very upset and said that he knows which one of his friends betrayed him and posted it online (not going to mention any name here) as you'd expect, a lot of drama was made and many posts were removed here in GBATemp, however one good thing came out of this and that is Crediar finally decided to release a more recent version online, thus Quadforce was born, I remember struggling the first time finding the Roms for both Mario Kart games but G0dlike helped me through it via a PM... Even though we didn't speak much if it wasn't for him buying the source code for Dios Mios we would have never had Dios Mios which later on led to the creation of Nintendont, may he rest in peace...
Anyway I don't know if Crediar posted the source code for Dios Mios online or not but I know the early versions are still lurking on the internet.
