Does nobody listen about blocking MAC address? I can't block URLs either so I do my MAC address
if you mean you just block your wii u completely you might as well just not bother connecting to wifi, tubehax does the job fine, and means you can still access online and eshop etc but still avoid updates

or your just overly paranoid....people want online access still....thats why people are saying use the tubehax DNS....it simpler and you can still play online and access the eshop, blocking everything is pretty extreme
where does paranoia come into it sparky? If u want kernel and WebKit access but to be 100% sure u can't update then block your mac that's all I was sayin

sure, if you understand that blocking via mac blocks everything....but imho blocking via dns is simpler and still safe and less drawbacks meaning you can decide not to self host, still access online play and eshop etc.......for most people they probably still want that stuff...paranoia comes into it when you think even having the updates servers blocked isn't enough and you might still update your console, as long as smealum doesn't suddenly remove the update server blocks then we should be fine

If you're going to blacklist your Wii U's MAC address in your router, why not just remove the internet settings from your Wii U altogether?
The solution that gamesquest1 has put forward to you is more than adequate, and is a time proven method. But if you want to sit there and name-call, have at it, and miss out on all of the online capabilities you could be enjoying.

Well clearly it's not enough otherwise there wouldn't be a few reports that people have accidentally updated. I didn't realise tryin to help/suggest somethin to u would lead to u bein pissy.

who is being pissy  i just pointed out that blocking via mac address is like the sledgehammer form of blocking, nobody using the tubehax dns have updated, only people who either used openDNS and didnt take into account dynamic IP's or people who removed the blocks for accessing eshop.......which afaik isnt even nessisary i still got stuff from eshop with tubehax DNS setup

No, Open DNS lead to accidental updates. TubeHax DNS is something different altogether.

I actually use my MAC Address instead of my IP address. Anyone who uses DHCP for their LAN IP should as well.

You could block all internet with the MAC, but it's totally possible to just block update servers by using your Wii U's MAC too. I've been doing it since the beginning.

that depends on the router though, the original suggestion for blocking the mac address was for people who dont have any access to url blocking/parental controls on their router....but if you have both then sure thing combining the 2 to just block the wiiu is a good idea, guess it all just boils down to what people have access too, so its easier to just suggest using tubehax DNS as we know everyone can do that, and then we dont have to explain how to the average end user how to access their specific routers settings and where the settings are for each different brand/model router

You usually can't block a mac without them either. So they must have one crappy router. Lol

a lot of the free routers that come free from ISP's lack basic normal router options......no doubt so the manufacturer can still sell additional routers to people who need some of those basic features such as URL blacklisting etc

Most free routers that come from ISPs are rebranded and can have their good firmware put back on it. Also, most isp routers do have these capabilities. Usually named some dumb shit like verizon does.

Edit: Usually they are two in one units now from ISPs around here. Even those have capabilities to do this. :)

yeah, but some don't and even if that wasn't the case and every router had the ability to block URL's its still more complicated to explain to the average joe how to access their router page, or what the default login details are, or where exactly the URL blocking feature is buried in there.....i would much prefer to say "go to settings, change DNS to 107.211.140.065" does pretty much the same thing and is a universal guide

If you dont understand how to use your router, maybe you shouldnt be here then. Let alone have wifi. :)

Not in Australia. We have one dominant ISP, and their routers are locked down to shit. They push the firmware updates themselves, and lock everything.
My modem/router is a Thompson TG797n v3, but under my ISPs naming scheme, it's a T Gateway. It blows chunks, and the original firmware can't be put back on.
Their latest firmware was pushed last week, and that removed the option to change DNS settings at the router level.
