Hold on, Gateway does something that makes Nintendo recognize its games as eshop games, right? I'm not familiar with Gateway but I read somewhere that it was because of that, Nintendo "ignores" gateway users?
eshop games don't require headers.
Your wording is confusing, or maybe you were confused by someone else.
On Gateway you can download .cia games which are basically eshop games (download right to your system) and they don't require headers. .3dz files do require headers to play online and you should get private ones to do so (or risk a ban, despite what Dark Fulgore is saying).

It doesn't. Playing with a cartridge (which is what GW simulates) online does. If you don't play online, you can use a .3DS file instead of a .3DZ file and it won't matter.
No you dont. But you must start a new game using your private header (if you are using sky3ds)
Sadly I have current no way to rip a private header, would be great if they didn't ban people anymore for using public headers hahahaha....yeah right...I can dream but at the same time I cannot complain about anything since it's pretty much illegal anyways.

Are you using sky3ds? Because you dont need to change the chip id, just inject your private header to sky3ds template and you are done.
And yes, if you inject your private header to template your old save will be corrupted. (Except for card type 2) but dont use your old save, start a new one using your private header then you will not be banned

If someone shared a private header with you then it wouldn't be private
You can just buy a game and rip the header yourself, there's also people on the forums that you can pay to rip the header off a game you have bought and they send it to youIf someone shared a private header with you then it wouldn't be private

what you could do is find someone who has gateway or find someone on the forums to help you
