Pimax reveals new range of VR headsets and accessories

During its annual online Pimax Frontier 2024 event, VR specialist Pimax has revealed its new range of VR headsets and accessories. These are mostly new additions to the Pimax Crystal line, rather than new product lines of their own. Below is a summary of the products revealed during the event:
  • Pimax Crystal Super: This is Pimax's latest "ultra-high-end headset" for PCVR which features inside-out tracking, up to 120Hz refresh rate, increased FOV, 29.5 million pixels, 3840 x 3840 pixels per eye and an innovative changeable optical engine. The headset will start from 1799 USD and is estimated to start shipping in Q4 this year.
  • Pimax Crystal Light: A budget-friendly high-end PCVR headset with 2880 x 2880 resolution per eye, up to 120Hz refresh rate and weighs 30% less. It has no standalone capabilities, no swappable lenses and eye-tracking feature. The Crystal Light will start at 699 USD and is available for pre-order now with an estimated shipping for May 2024.
  • Pimax Crystal AirLink: This accessory for the original Pimax Crystal VR headset enables users to play PCVR game wirelessly with highbandwidth. It includes a transmitter and receiver that plugs into the PC and a lightweight dongle that attaches to the headset via a micro-HDMI connection. With this accessory, the Crystal supports the full resolution at 2880 x 2880 resolution per eye, supports 90 Hz refresh rate, has ultra-low latency and has an expected battery life of 2-3 hours. The AirLink is priced at 299 USD, and is expected to ship later this year.

$1799 gosh, that's a big ask

I'm a pleb who's only used the oculus headsets, is the price of something like this worth it?

Edit: so after some more research this thing has significantly better resolution than a lot of other products on the market, BUT you are gonna need a really beefy PC to make that useful (which makes sense)

Never had A VR headset... So I have no idea what are you guys talking about :(
Some people fall in love, others not so much

I have used my headset a few times, but it mostly sits in a box collecting dust

I have a brother who uses his daily

For me once the novelty wears off, I am stuck with this giant thing on my head which is less comfortable than a TV screen. If these things ever get down to glasses size maybe I would be more interested

And it's silly pricing like this that will forever keep VR unattainable to people like me. It's not like they're doing the graphical processing in the headset, so why haven't prices come down to affordable levels yet? If they would, VR would see mass adoption and better support.

But as of right now, VR is a rich man's unattainable joke

This headset is jame packed with new stuff

If they released like the original oculus now it could probably be pretty cheap, you can buy them on eBay on the low - but of course you have to put up with outdated tech at that point (my headset is pretty blurry around the edges of fov)

> Budget friendly
>$700+tax+shipping
> More pixels than 4K
> VR requires 90+fps to avoid instant motion sickness at all times

How is it budget friendly when it still requires a 4090 just to drive the thing?

Fucking tech bros really think everyone can just afford to drop new flagship phone money every week and ignore things like food or rent, huh?

You're not alone, I too don't understand this logic. "Budget-friendly" VR would be around the $99 mark if it ever wants to be taken seriously. It's a headset, not a GPU doing the rendering... It shouldn't cost the same price as a PS5 or more.

woah that's expensive

Its great for hla, modded skyrim and some japanese games and videos. Some use for a chat game but that's full of freaks.
You don't need to tell me why lol, I really want to try Beat Saber and that Battle Royale game, and some more.
"japanese games and videos" though

Man that price is steep, but it's nice that they have a budget option. The only headset I've ever bought is a Vive which I preordered day 1, and while I loved it back in the day, I kind of lost interest in VR in general when I ditched Windows and switched to Linux. At least when I tried it back then, barely anything VR worked on Linux.

Maybe I'll try getting back into VR if the linux situation improved. One of my favorite things to do in VR was to just explore maps of old games that I played as a kid. It's like some next level nostalgia tripping when you can actually walk/fly around Banjo Kazooie or Ocarina of Time maps in realistic 1:1 scale. Pavlov had a couple of modded maps like that, and I remember having a fun time massacring noobs in hyrule castle town lol

Wish I could quote my old post from before this announcement, It's literally the exact same thing that they always pump out. You can't even tell when they make a new one because it's just the same design with a higher resolution and different FoV or something
Still disappointed that they gave up on the portal so soon
