This isn't something I know a lot about, but I get the impression that Project 64 v1.6 still has a following. Why is that? I would have thought, perhaprs naively, that the latest version would be better.

I think there was also a v1.7 circa 2005, but I think you had to pay for it or be on some kind of insider program.

Anyone know about this stuff?

Feel free to tell me other things about N64 emulation too :)

I didn't know about this until Kaze Emanuar talked about related stuff in a recent video of his.

From what he mentions in the video and pinned comment, and also from reading elsewhere, it seems that many of the later versions were plagued with security breaches, malware opt-out installations, and such. Also the emulation itself seems to have some downsides in comparison to 1.6 (rather than being a complete upgrade), but I don't know what these are.

I'm really not sure whether 1.6 is still a good version -- presumably it's at least good enough for a lot of people!
But since the project has been open source (and open to contribution) for a while now, I'd think it's safe to use the latest releases.

Later builds of Project64 are more accurate but have higher performance costs and advertising. 1.6 is less accurate, uses less system resources, but has a rather bad sandbox escape exploit which can allow for roms to include malware that can be executed on the host system.
Not only that Project64 v1.6 is unfortunately more common, but somebody can create a specially crafted ROM file that executes arbitrary code on the host machine, such as malware.
