It is a pain in the ass to have to reinstall. I use Acronis true image home to make images of the entire system drive. If something happens like a drive failure or a virus i can restore the entire drive. It has saved me alot.

There's a slight issue, like, my primary HDD has system files and other files in it, not separated into partitions, so cloning or imaging the drive would take countless hours to do. I don't think I can partition the drive to copy my stuff over, well, maybe, but it'd be a pain. Can't I try to do a repair install first? Then a clean if that doesn't work? And should I install Win 10 and make it a dual boot system? Unless I could somehow selectively clone or image the Windows portion, yeah, it would just..be a pain to do it as-is.

I have no feasible way to clone several hundred GB of data, unless I can partition it from the rest of the drive. Unless I can somehow partition the free space I do have, and then move the nonessential data over, and make the remaining partition for Windows and reinstall over that. IDK.

The damage is done so cloning now wont help unless the drive was failing then you would try a backup. I have made successful backups from failing drives. At the moment im doing a server upgrade to a 4tb drive. Bestbuy had a WD 4tb for $109. You can install windows 10 if you want that's up to you. A dual boot is a good option. if you have an old 80gb drive laying around then you can try it. It would suck if it still locked up after you updated from 7....

Is it still locking up?

Not today, no, but I have a second and third HDD to use, and I made a partition on the new drive for Windows, so I can use that.

I would just use an activator lol. I used one for windows 10 enterprise and it receives updates fine.

I heard those only last for 180 days or so, and you have to use them again. I have Win 7 Pro, and currently Win 10 pro flashed to a USB flash drive. I'd need to boot into the boot menu and do a custom install. I really don't want to have to pay for a license

I'd just stick with Windows 7. In my experience it's more stable and somewhat faster.

Off topic: Oh my God. I just looked at your fox blog in your signature. They're so cute!

So, should I stick with Windows 7, despite ending support in 2020? I wish to repair install and clean install as a last resort.
Yes, stay with win7. İf you are on low or mid range pc specs, I highly recommending. My pc is lagging strangely every time I use windows 10. And windows 10 cemu performance is suck!

My specs are as follows:

CPU - Core i7 4470 3.4 GHz
GPU - MSI GTX 970
RAM - 16 GB DDR3 SDRAM

I wouldn't think Win 10 would run that badly, and I can always go back to 7 since I'd be dual booting these.

Aren't those files vital? I'd think that deleting those, esp. the User.POL and Registry.POL would cause instabilities. Either way, at least I can keep all my data as it is synced, and that reinstalling should alleviate the issue if it persists.

I wouldn't be surprised, while the ones I used aren't listed in there per se, they may fall under that nonetheless. *sigh* Yikes. I'm more and more wanting to completely move over to Firefox at this rate.

I don't know >< I've used it for years, and transferring all my passwords, bookmarks, etc is gonna be hell going to Firefox.
checkout chrome's FLAGS page. you can enable a setting that will allow you to download all of that data into a few files. (passwords for sure, don't know if bookmarks already do that)

There is for both, and I've done so, so I'd be able to sync all my info easily, a nice feature. Things seem fine today, but will keep a close eye. I suspect that malware didn't do my PC any favors, but it's gone now as well. Win 10 sounds very tempting to dual boot, and still retain Windows 7. How do apps installed on Win 7 work in 10? Would I just need to tell it where to find them, like Steam?

microsoft never stoped giving out free keys, so just run the upgrader. it should take care of everything.

Hmm, then I'd have to overwrite my current installation of 7, when I want to set up a dual boot with 10 on another HDD; I'd rather avoid overwriting if I can. I've been reading that I can theoretically use my 7 key when activating 10. But how do apps like Steam fare? I can just tell the Steam libraries to point to the other HDD?

Edit: If not this https://www.thurrott.com/windows/wi...ill-clean-install-windows-10-windows-78-x-key

I may have to obtain a legit key through unscrupulous means.

For Steam it's no problem, it should be able to load just by running the exe without changing anything or reinstalling Steam. But on the off chance it doesn't for whatever reason, you might need to reinstall Steam over itself in Win10. Your games won't be lost by doing that.
Other programs can be hit and miss. They might have dependencies that aren't installed since you didn't run the setup, or they might require some registry entries that the setup creates in order to work. If you can find the required registry entries you can export them and reimport them in Win10 though. The same method of reinstalling the program over itself can work here too.
Sometimes you just have to settle with having 2 copies of a program though because the data from the 2 OSes conflicts.

You do need to perform an upgrade once so your PC is marked as having a valid Win10 license on their servers, since the product key you get after the upgrade is just a generic key that's the same for everyone who got the free upgrade, so instead they rely on checking the upgrade status on the server side. Once you've performed a Win10 upgrade you can reinstall from scratch using the same generic key you got after the upgrade.
You can roll back to Windows 7 for up to 30 days after upgrading, and theoretically everything will be exactly as it was before the upgrade, so there's no need to worry about that.

I'm not sure when it comes to programs and duel booting, but I think you can still get a free key if you install in duelboot mode via their usb tool. just be sure to grab both your keys with this.

Both keys? I currently only have 7 installed.

What can I do about activating? Windows 10 is 120 bucks for Home and 200 for Pro, which is a bit steep IMO. Yeah, I've been reading up on Steam, as it's not a typical program in how it works, etc. I'm more worried about SFM/ Source SDK as I use that and it's on the Windows drive. But my PC can handle both OSes too as well.
