All Mario Kart games have their differences in gameplay. It's actually a lot more noticeable than you're trying to make it sound.

IMO, Mario Kart Wii was the last good MK game. After that the gameplay tweaks and balancing were for the worst.
actually, mk7 was the last balanced mario kart game. Once mk8 came by the balancing went out the window again.

Soccer is still the world's most popular sport and I'm pretty sure EA has the only license to make FIFA games. They're full of MTX and other garbage, but just like Call of Duty, people keep buying the games no matter how abusive the payment model is.

mk8 is leaps and bounds better than mariokart wii(the worst one) and doubledash, but mk8 was a 2014 game
mk8 deluxe comes with all the dlc some new characters and a battle mode so the original mk8 is the worst for not having a proper battle mode when ever other mario kart game did.

It's no wonder this happened. Horizon Zero Dawn was yet another overhyped game. Is that to say it's bad? No. Just not as good of a game as advertised.
Same goes for Zelda BOTW

HZD was a new IP, it's surprising it sold as well as it did tbh.

All credit to Nintendo though having 3 exclusives in the top 6, and only beaten by multi platform annual rehashes. It's been Nintendo's year that's for sure, what a come back.

Not sure where the surprise is..

1- The Wii U was - sales wise - a failure. In other words not a lot of people bought it. The switch however is already a success, so for most people, this is a NEW game. When it was released is irrelevant.

2- The success of the switch plays a factor in this as well. Mario games is almost always an insta-buy. It being a Mario game, the only racing game on the system at the time I believe (excluding fast RMX which also is technically a rerelease of the Wii U game), and one of the first games to be released on the switch plays a factor in this.

3- The PS4 game serves a specific audience for this genre. Mario kart however appeals even to those that are not into racing games. Multiplayer is also a factor of interest for these type of games.

4- This one is my personal opinion, but I tend to believe that most gamers worldwide are mostly kids (yes adult gamers are a lot as well but I believe kids are much more). I would think a switch has a more of an appeal to them than The PS4, and if they have both, I would think that MK8 is more of a fit than HZD.

Now every single point I mentioned might not be a reason enough, but when you consider them all together, I really don't see the surprise..

the surprise comes from people who dont realize gaming websites and forums like these dont reflect the real world. A game like horizon only has limited appeal to a certain group of gamers when compared to a mario kart game.

There's many more soccer games. It's just the only game series licenced by the FIFA.
You could even call Rocket League a soccer game somehow... and that one is actually more fun than any game featuring real soccer I ever played.

However, I like how the exclusives of Nintendo's underdog console sell better than the exclusives of the well-established PS4. It kinda shows what the console is actually bought for. Though this might have sounded like smack talk, it's still not less of an accomplishment to get that many sales with a new ip.

Here we go. Just add deluxe to the title of a game previously released and it will be brought 3.8 millions times in 8 months.
Almost all of those are buying for the first time. Very little overlap with WiiU owners because there were very few WiiU owners.

Yeah I suppose there's Mario Strikers, which I wouldn't mind Nintendo reviving. Still, EA has cornered the real-sport market for both soccer and (American) football games, which stifles creativity.

Well, to be fair hardly anyone played the original MK8 since the Wii U sold so poorly.
With it being arguably the best Mario Kart game to date and the port being even better I'm not surprised it sells well, the Switch has been out for less than a year after all.
What surprises me more is that FIFA and CoD are on the top.

I suspect these played a part:
1) MK is a popular series.
2) The Switch is selling better.
3) It was released close to launch.
4) The Switch is more portable than the Wii U.

What surprises me more is that FIFA and CoD are on the top.

Shouldn't really, not only are they very popular series but they are also multiplatform.

I know someone who bought a PS4 on launch because of FIFA.

How much more can you be creative with football and soccer to make each yearly game different? All you can really do is update the roster. Maybe some side game modes, but they already do that.

You can't really have a story line either. You can't really do much different with sports games.
