@reminon don't exaggerate.
The OP's question was legit. He probably wanted to know if there would be ROM loaders before long.
The first answers were a little overboard but no answer was about condemning piracy. They were telling it was selfish to give the console as a gift to his son, but prohibit him playing the game he likes or using it as he wishes, i.e. a fake gift is cruel.
The piracy bit is a narrative that is only going on in your head and in the head of a couple of others that fail to see the problem is the backstabbing this would represent to the kid.

My opinion is that you don't know how to spell "your", or "wants".

"You're" is a contraction of "you" and "are". So you're literally saying "you are opinion please". No, I am not opinion thank you very much!
"Want's" isn't plural either. The 's is a contraction of "is". So what you're saying is "he really want is this game", which doesn't make any sense.

Consider yourself educated now.

"In your heeead, in your heeead, zombie, zombie, zombie-ie-ie". Thanks for that.

There's no proof he's waiting on a rom loader. Waiting to decrypt newer games for use on 3 0.0 is not equal to waiting for piracy.

Even then, we know nothing about this person, and his relationship with his kid is none of our business. He wanted an opinion about updating or not..and that's all he should have gotten.

Instead he got speculation of what kind of person and parent he is.

Don't pretend he's innocent. You don't buy your kid a gift and turn around and say they can't use it for a reason like homebrew. They don't understand the latter. Unless he just flat out doesn't give him the Switch and says nothing.. Not like that's much better. If he didn't want the attacks, he should have thought it through huh?

For those of you not familiar with the holiday, Christmas is not for three more weeks. OP is not a horrible person refusing to let his son update his console; he hasn't even opened it yet. He is asking, three weeks in advanced, whether he should update the console. Chill.

My two cents: the next possible news on whether piracy would be possible or not will likely come with the Chaos Communication Congress event in late December, but that starts a few days after Christmas. I might have suggested getting him the new Zelda game instead, which is playable without updating, but it sounds like his interests are more aligned with Mario. I would go ahead and let him update, although I would also check this message board again on Christmas Eve or so to see if anything has changed first.
I think people are more offended about buying someone a present and then considering not letting them use it. Like "Hey son I got you the new Nintendo Switch! But you can't play the games you want because we're waiting for it to be hacked."

Sorry, but you are being absurd.
First of all, when the OP asks for an opinion, he is asking for a suggestion for the case he is describing.
Also, "it is not your business" to give a suggestion at all, if you give one it is voluntarily and trying to pivot around the information the OP stated.
What did he talk about?
  • the console as a gift
  • the kid WANTS odyssey (he repeats this two times, so the kid and odyssey must be a focal point in your suggestion)
  • he thinks it may take long for "things to evolve", it is not stated clearly but he wants either romloaders or support for running games that require newer firmware, for the answers given this point doesn't matter, because NOBODY talked about or condemned PIRACY.
If you happen to be an idiot and don't want to read between lines what he is actually asking, or what are his concerns (the kid and the game), then you can only answer the only YES/NO direct question he made:
"My question is, are you guys updating for odyssey." YES/NO.

And regarding what is my business and what is not, it is up to me to decide, gentleman.

If you just NEED your Switch to be hacked, then wait. It still could be quite awhile before anything substantial drops beyond the entrypoint. If you're ok with having a not hacked system so that your 9yo can have a ton of fun in the likes of Mario Odyssey, then update immediately. There is always the possibility that later FWs may be exploited in the future as well. I mean there is absolutely no guarantee in that regard, but it was a risk i was more than willing to take. If one day my Switch can be hacked, awesome! If it never can, oh well, it already has an awesome selection of legit games regardless.

More than likely there will need to be at least 2 major exploits before one will be released. It makes sense to hold onto an eol exploit to further research, and to not have to start from scratch.

One exploit has already been released publicly, there just is nothing yet to run with it.

Don't update. It's the same bullshit like Always . They said it during the Wii era, they said the same shit during the Wii U era and during the 3ds era and all came back crying after that and they're doing it again and eventually will come crying back again.
Kernel acces has already been achieved but not public so in the end you'll get something like custom firmware or emunand just like it was with the PS3 and everybody also said the same shit back then and had to wait over 6 years or more before they could even hack their consoles again.

If there wasn't any possibility then devs would say ''UPDATE YOUR CONSOLES, NO HACKS COMING SOON'' But instead they're saying ''DON'T UPDATE YOUR CONSOLE NO NEW ENTRYPOINTS WILL BE AVAIBLE IN A FUCKING LONG ASS TIME''.
I'd take the devs word over people who updated accidently or people who couldn't wait.
They're just saying that shit just to make them feel better that they did update. In the end it will be the users who waited that'll have the last laugh and it will be them who updated crying in a corner once more again.
Don't fucking update or atleast buy a new console now because 3.0 consoles will be rare in the future ahead !!!
Amen brother

So your examples of why you shouldn't update, are all systems that you could have updated and sure enough exploits ended up being released for the later FWs for those systems as well? Wii, Wii U, and 3DS, right now you can hack any one of their latest firmwares (granted it may take more work to accomplish if you need to grab a DS flashcard and magnet, but it can be done). I don't disagree with your overall point, but those were poor examples to be pointing to to illustrate your point.

The Wii, Wii U, and 3DS take years to get to the point where they are now. The Vita has hacking troubles still, and that's been around for 4 years, and it may never be fully hacked. Just like the Sega Saturn, which took literally 20 years to negate DRM. I won't find the Switch to be any different.

Hopefully I'm wrong, but to be very honest, the way people treat hackers these days, well, I wouldn't hold my breath.

I came here just to joke and say "I'm not an opinion, you're welcome", but I can see people came first to do it

Yeah, but everyone was telling you all along not to update your Wii U, but I continuously did, and by the time that CBHC was publicly released, I was on the latest Wii U firmware and it worked like a charm. The Wii U was an era where they told us not to update the whole time, yet by the time you could really hack your Wii U, you could be on the latest FW to do it. The 3DS constantly found new exploits for the latest FWs that Nintendo kept having to patch away, you could be out of luck for a few months to hack a 3DS, but typically one way or another an exploit would drop until we got to the point where we're at now where an impossible to block exploit exists regardless of the FW. And the Wii would get patched, but was so easy to exploited that it would almost immediately find a new exploit when any new FW tried to block entrypoints.

See what I'm saying? That their stance that the Wii, Wii U, and 3DS should stand as examples as reasons not to update to ensure you can hack your system, are poor examples of why you shouldn't update considering with each FW update containing blocks to entrypoints, other new ones would arrive fairly quickly. I'm aware that the Switch is a different beast, and that new entrypoints wont be found nearly as quickly or easily, as such, I think it should be compared to much more difficult to exploit systems based on firmware, like the PS3.

That is actually true, I was there filming it.

That was just before getting into hybernation next to Mr. Disney.
It's so sad there were problems with his cryogenization chamber, but well sure they solved those in the 4 years before my slumber.
It's been not so many years since they woke and fixed me up, and though it was hard in the beginning to get used to this idea that the Soviet Union now works for us and send our Astronauts to space I've been able to adjust lately.
First I thought that they must have won the space race, perhaps the world found out about our ruse, perhaps they sent man to the moon... But no, that was not the cause, in the end it seems they were just better putting things into space, just not on the moon.
That was shocking, but I guess if it is cheaper to make them do the work, then why not. It is tax money being spared for better use after all...
was it windy
