So, for those of us that were able to softmod our Xbox systems, what would be the go-to emulators for older systems and stuff?

Always wanted one of these Xbox systems, in part because my first exposure to what one is like was from a friend that had one with a build of mame that was able to run ninja baseball Batman. Even compared to my then main PC, I never experienced that game running without any frame drops or errors of any kind before discovering it on that system, and I've been wanting to run this game on there since. So obviously, some kind of mame that can run that game, is a must-have.

For NES NestopiaX
For SNES ZSNEXBOX
For N64 Surreal64
For some Arcade stuff Final Burn Legends
For GBA XBoyadvance
For Mame MameX
For Genesis Neogenesis
For PSX PCSXBOX

You could upgrade the ram of your xbox for better performance.

How so? I have a mix of 1.0's and 1.6's to work with.

Also, while I was able to successfully upgrade one, it was with a found PATA drive I didn't think I had. So almost any other I would need to install something newer. But I can't find any of these supposed adapter that work.

Also, would an SSD even be worth getting for these systems?

You need a 1.0-1.5 do upgrade the ram.
And you need to solder the ram chip on the mobo. (and you need a modded bios)

couldn't get the bridging to link, and by the 3rd attempt, the solder pads where they were supposed to just came off with the iron. It definitely wouldn't even try to turn on after that.

I wasn't expecting to be able to get another 1.0 either... but just lucked out and managed to snag a couple that were being sold "for parts", and fixed them up. along with some 1.6's. Even managed to fix up a 1.6b enough to gift to someone who's also wanted a system.

Did you try to turn it on?

Well, now that I finally have a system with enough storage to start putting complete rom sets on it...

I recall there was a build of RetroArch that did work on the original Xbox, but for the life of me, I can't find a download of it anywhere. Was that project abandoned? or was it just not that good on this era of console?

Retroarch on the og xbox was last touched in 2013 and you should rather get xbmc emustation and some emus.

What the heck is that? I did stumble across XBMC4Xbox as part of the updated Hexen tools disc I was able to run. However, it doesn't seem like it's picking up on anything; it certainly doesn't seem to interface with the modern streaming sites like the page for it implies.

In any case, this part is relatively new to me, and Google seems to have an affinity for intentionally hiding the results I need.

Just google XBMC emustation and it should give you answers.

I thought PS4/5 and Xbox One emulation would be kind of easy since they basically just a PC
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
    they sorta are a pc
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They haslve dedicated on board chips that aren't tweaked like x64/x32 afaik
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
but its a custom os for both of them
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
    designed for only specific hardware
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
so you have to learn to emulate that specific hardware which isn't as easy as you'd think

It's a locked down Linux distro basically
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think the only custom hardware is to do with the SSD and a security chip
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Probably combined in one chip
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
They place married security chips onto boards iirc

  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Didn't see much need for a console, all the advantages have kind of disappeared
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
the ps3 used to support installing linux because the cpu was so powerful
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
Then the games are $70 and they want to reboot and refresh the same game every year
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
The ps3 was always Linux they just found a way to make it open source
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
I'm avoiding buying from the big 3 at all atm
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
At one point PC game pads where poorly supported, loading a game had setup, it was complicated. Now it's almost as easy as a console.
  • ColdBlitz @ ColdBlitz:
nintendo needs to up their game soon
  • K3Nv2 @ K3Nv2:
