This application is designed for two main tasks:

  • Produce 1 to 1 dumps of game cards.
  • Introduce functionality that allows to run these dumps.
Aplication consists of user application that manages the driver settings and kernel plugin that is used to emulate game card.

The release of this tool means very little to pirates, aside from the handful of problem games that previously didn't work.

Things of note:
  • At this time the plugin does not work with sd2vita, it will unmount and ignore your sd2vita (sd2vita support is planned for the next release).
  • By established scene standards all existing dumps are considered "nuked", as only 1:1 game dumps comply with established standards (irrelevant to pirates)
  • As a result, .psv is the new official file extension for 1:1 game dumps

In Laymans Terms:
Think about it in terms of any other scene that you may know of. The new format, .psv, is the equivalent to Game Boy Advance's .gba or for a PC game in CD, an ISO. It's an exact, 1:1 copy of the contents of the cart/CD (including its file structure).

That's why you'll get "bloated" .psv files: if the cart's capacity is, say, 2 GB and the game only occupies 300 MB, then you'll get 300 MB of data and 1.7 GB of filler (zeroes most of the time). That's what happened, for example, with Wii releases and why "scrubbing" (removing the unnecessary filler data to make the file smaller) became such a common practice.

Thanks for making this post @Xandrid. I was going to do it myself, but didn't want the responsibility of maintaining an official [release] thread.

No problemo, saw that no one made a thread and took an opportunity. And I'll add that to the OP

NoNpDrm is the way to go for most people. Psvgamesd is great for archiving purposes, but it creates a 1 to 1 image of the cartridge resulting in wasted space, a lot of it in some cases.

You also have to go through the app to mount images as opposed to having bubbles. What I can see happening is people storing vita games in .psv and converting them for use with NoNpDrm to actually play them.

(In Layman Terms, you have bloated dump until individual files are extracted, so that is exactly what "NoNpDRM" does at the moment.................Going beyond that.................."PSVGameSD" is apparently not going to use individual files, aka a dump of the game, but is a single image file)

(All "NoNpDRM" does is create a dummy license file so the vita can use the encrypted files as normal.................what your referring to with "PSVGameSD" is using a plugin to modify the natural use of the way the Vita uses its data so that it reads from an image file, on its memory card, rather than loose files as it does normally)

("PSVGameSD" will require more processing power, and it may not work with sd2vita because of a driver conflict.............sadly the release group choose to make the claim that all dumps will no longer be valid, or, that, making the Vita require more processing power to read a backup is something we cannot understand)

(Going to probably skip this release, and, hope for a update to NoNpDRM plugin so it can dump game carts on higher firmwares, notable, I haven't tried to dump a game from NoNpDRM with a higher firmware, which it probably does)

(Is there, really a reason to use PSVGameSD? Don't attack the scene, or the good people that rely on them with paid subscriptions to psn that sony banned, unfortunately, banning people without issuing an update to its own device firmware (breaking its own policy)

(Good Luck, actually I'm waiting for the update, to hopefully, provide something different from what NoNpDRM offers)

(..................So this release could break troublesome games that NoNpDRM fixed, like the Akiba's Trip, Atelier Series, or FFX and FFX-2 since it requires more processing power.................has anyone tested these troublesome games...............if anyone does with this release..............please let me know what happens)

From what I understand NoNpDrm plays all games =<3.60. That means it is actually compatible with more games than psvgamesd since psvgamesd can't dump digital games. Yifan said we should nuke other types of dumps, but that's just crazy.

vita games can be up to 4GBs. the largest game I know of is world of final fantasy. square enix placed the game on the cart while voices had to be downloaded at like 3GBs, so that's 7GBs for one game when the largest normal memory card is 64GBs, and those are only sold in Japan. lol

For me, there is a huge lack in NoNpDRM and PSVGameSD solutions which is not mentionned in this comparison table: they doesn't support game modding (specially when the game has a patch) !
Actually, there's still an old method by Major Tom that we can still use to mod official games. It's buried somewhere on Wololo, but it still works for translations and such.
