PS1/2 Winhiip no longer working (installing PS2 games to hdd)

I was previously using Winhiip to install my PS2 games to ide hdd via a usb to ide adapter. After I finished I 'safely disconnected' the USB adapter via right clicking on the system tray bottom right hand corner. A few hours later I tried to install some new games but now Windows disk management no longer sees the hdd. As a consequence the PS2 hdd no longer displays inside Winhiip. Nothing has changed as far as I can see from a few hours ago so what has gone wrong? Any ideas? I really don't want to try the cat cable as that is too slow and in the past my PS2 network adapter died going down that route.

Quick answers to anticipate questions:
- I'm using Windows 10
- HDD still plays the games fine in the PS2 (ulaunch says I have 193GB free out of 320GB. 48bit formatted. Less than 100 games)
- Yes, I right clicked run as administrator.
- Yes, I've tried re-searching/refreshing for hdds in Windows Disk Management (it only shows the non-PS2 hdds whereas I think the PS2 hdd was number 4 before - at least that is what Winhiip log file says)
- Yes, I tried shutting down computer and cold boot.
- Yes, the hdd is spinning
- No, Windows is no longer showing a usb connected device in the system tray like it did before.
- I have tried 2 different USB to ide adapters with the same result (they both work with other hdds)
- No, I can't connect the hdd directly to motherboard because I don't have ide slot

Aha. Solved it. Apparently Windows is no longer recognising a USB connected device using the USB slots on the front of the computer. I had a spare USB slot in the back and plugged it in. It now works. Windows disk management now comes up and asks to intialize a device, disk 4 and it shows as 'unallocated'. Winhiip now sees it fine, like it used to.

Strange, because up until now I have been using the slots in the front for the PS2 hdd. It spins up exactly as you would expect connected to the front. I use other devices like USB and camera in the front and they work. So what is different about the slot in the back? Could it be some kind of intermittent power issue? The hdd has it's own power via the adapters molex cable so I really don't know if that would be an issue. Anyway, this is useful info for those who have similar problems with Winhiip and Windows recognising their PS2 hdd.

true, ulaunchelf has had numerous updates as well. i shouldve said "most" your ps2 stuff. lol
winhiip hasnt been touched in forever and works great.
