I used to do that but it messed up my bottom screen on my ds lite. What I would is take off the back and get some canned air and some q-tips with rubbing alchohol and clean the contacts.Yes, blow into the side gaps of the L and R buttons.
That worked for me, when the R button sometimes wouldn't work, unless I pressed it hard enough.
And no, the combo can't be changed.
