Following on from @Vulpes Abnocto's state of the temp thread, I've had a few ideas about how to increase the quality of postings here. These are just suggestions so anybody is of course free to disagree.
  1. Replace post count with 'like ratio'. This would divide the number of likes by the number of posts to give a score for the user. This would encourage users to make quality posts which garner likes in order to increase their like ratio rather than shitposting to increase their post count
  2. Prevent users with fewer than 100 posts from posting in the tutorials forums. I for one get fed up seeing people post questions there
  3. Remove the 'ask' feature. The postings here seem to be repetitive and of low quality. I'm not sure why this is, but I wonder if it's because some users see the 'ask' button and click it straight away without looking at the forums.
  4. Moderate the EOF. I realise that th EOF is designed to be open for any discussion, but I think it encourages shitposting which inevitably spills over to the main forums. It's a bit like a rowdy bar where people fall out into the street and keep being rowdy even though they're not in the bar any more...

i do not agree, there are people who give likes for "good" or "funny" shitposting.. or for whatever reason...
we already previously discussed how people found the likes system to encorage shitty posting..
a person having a ratio of likes and posts just means it is a popular person, it doesn't mean it's helpful or a "quality" member

EOF was cool.. now people just make countless threads there everyday posting either a single sentece..
it used to have some quality, now is just a bunch of micro threads

remember when we had vinsclones? we had 1 thread with 100 pages about it
now we got 100 threads a day with 1-5 replies sometimes there is 20 replies and i can't understand wth they are talking, i feel like an old 60yo dude trying to understand teenagers and i am in the 20s...

when the vinsclones was a trend, there was people creating other threads related to vinsclones but i remember they either were hammered down or just died and the original thread continued...

i am ok with the playground that the EOF offers but i whish it was not so like a 1 cent coin...

Maybe do what StackExchange does and have upvote and downvote.

what about a helpfull\thanks button alonngside with the like?
I think that's just as likely to be abused as the 'like' button.

I've updated my 'landing page' idea with some real links. Try clicking through the 'Nintendo 3DS' / 'play backups' / 11.x / Custom Firmware options and it will ultimately redirect to the appropriate tutorials and areas of the forum.

Replace post count with 'like ratio'.
Remove post count, replace with nothing. It could remain visible from the user's quick profile that you get by clicking on the username.
Prevent users with fewer than 100 posts from posting in the tutorials forums.
New users are going to need more help. Seems counterproductive. Just ignore them if they're being stupid. Prevent users with low post counts (<10) from making new threads, not sure if that's in place already.

i don't think the "this member was helpfull" button would be spammed or badly used..
it's natural that the like button is abused, in facebook most people press the button to say "i did read this" or an "ok" it's not used because you like something, it's used as a confirmation that you seen the post..
however "member was helpfull" button people wouldn't press it for any reason for example in the warez websites this button is barely clicked that in the descriptions they make sure to remind you to click it...

one of the scenarios of this abuse i can think of is when people start to answer without reading the the thread at all, give a vague generic answer and the OP is so desperate he clicks it because he is struggling to get some help
however this situation is not common

maybe you could have a limit of "member was helpfull button"?
and of course this button woudln't exist on EOF

Making a short quiz that a user is forced to answer would be nice. Downside? Control+F. If the terms and rules were summed up and made much shorter, the chances of them using the Control+F function is lower but here's still a chance.

Instead of making them read the rules, make them watch a video provided by GBAtemp which explains the rules. Try to make the video no longer than 5 minutes. After watching the video, make them answer a 20 item quiz. The video should probably be unlisted and disallow comments.

It would be nice to get the thread titles cleared up.
A thread with only "help" or "could you beliefe" or "watch this" isn't as clear as it should be imho.
If users with a "first" post like this could get a hint that this is not the way as it should i think they know where they are.
Means ...... they are be watched and couldnt do whatever they want to.

I think that there are (at the moment) less mod's, admins and supervisors and to much "new" users.
As i wrote before i'am a longtime GBATemp user without an account, now with an account and there where better times!

Today there are to many respectless people against other users or with scatology that i never seen on "open forums" before.
(Sometimes even the supervisors or mods are using that scatology speech!)

So i think it is time that we all step back and thing about how WE act sometimes here on GBATemp!
And maybe help by reporting thinks we see or read and dont agree with (what not may be right every time!)

Otherwise there are new users with an URL in theyr signature that leeds to a "walloftext" where everyone can do wathever they like to!
(Yesterday there was antisemitic wrotings on that walloftext 30 to 40 times repeating! Today this walloftext is empty again!)
That's something to watch over i think (i'am german so i kow what i'am talking about!).

......but let's be realistic! Even with 1000 Mod's, Admins, Supervisors...... it would be VERY VERY hard to get this in line :)

I don't really use social networking, so perhaps I misunderstand the purpose of 'like' buttons. I don't really get it ;)

YES! I hate seeing thread titles like 'please help me' and such. I sometimes look at them out of curiosity to see what they are about, but I kind of resent answering them...

I will propose a compromise on this likes business. How about divide number of posts by the number of likes I have issued.

I did once try correcting the spelling and grammar of basically every new post in the USN (back when the USN was quite active) over an extended period, the only exceptions being if someone had already been called out on it. Didn't make a great difference.

I do wonder why people post in tutorials of all things. When asked some users say because most of them have "and FAQs" in the title/description. That does not seem like a particularly good justification but if it is going to be one then it might be worth playing to it.

On the ask feature then I am not sure why it exists these days. It kind of worked originally (before the hack) but since their return, something which quite a few people asked for, it just seems to perform much the same function as the forums, albeit with fewer people looking it (more now it is in new content which people should be using rather than recent posts). I always feel odd doing long form answers there as well. The other option is integrate them even more tightly with the forums but that seems like work.

Also the EOF is moderated -- plenty of things get trashed, pruned or see people receive a cooling down period. It is however moderated to a slightly different standard. Sadly the glory days when it was still the testing area have long since passed. Maybe I will take to flooding it with whatever I might pass off as refined humour and seeing what results.

In the end the only thing that might help is if the 3ds and wii u got some games and that ain't happening.

see how i liked your post? i pressed it because you just mentioned me.. i also don't use social networking but i used to, and got friends that do...
they end up using the like button not for saying "i like this" but because they saw a post, didn't know what to say more or it was worth to give an answer,
it's kinda like when you write "lol" but you are not really launghing in real life...
you just write "lol" to give the impression to the other person that you agree with him but in reality you are just saying you mean "meh"
the like button does the same thing..
the person who created the post will think people like what he wrote and feel good with itself, but other people don't care that much about what he wrote, the "like" was just for sympathy and empathy

i hope i made some sense

I do agree though we should merge the like and post count to give a score. The score should be on a scale of 1-10
That would be disastrous for some users. I may fool others into thinking that one person is a helpful person but in all actuality, he or she just makes snarky comment and jokes that make fun of others

allow self moderation XD i.e if a specific post is reported say 10 times, have it automatically hidden pending review (just in case of people trying to abuse the feature) this would prevent further off topic posts by making the post invisible and any posts that quoted that post, losts of the times when a thread goess wayy off topic, it stems from one or 2 off topic posts

maybe also if at all possible allow a thread OP to manage their own thread, like for example the NTR thread, if cell could have banned specific users from his own thread and deleted comments...of couse this could be a feature that is only earned after X number of posts and can be removed for anyone abusing said feature

This is very dangerous for you and your reputation i think!
If you "but other people don't care that much about what he wrote, the "like" was just for sympathy and empathy" act like that your reputation will maybe go down more than you can imagine!
Some people here have insult others members in a very hard way.......would you press the like button because of "sympathy and empathy"?

Again i think that could be very dangerous!

Instead of removing the "Ask" feature, how about giving it a different section/place on the home page? I mean instead of it being thrown together in the "Recent Content" section, put another section like "Recently "Asked" Contents" or something similar.
