I use a heavy 15" laptop for University and gaming, and I highly recommend against it.
For courses and so, a very light and versatile windows tablet with attachable keyboard is the best way to go.
It is way more productive for studying, trust me. It doesn't get in your way like a laptop.
For gaming all laptops are SHIT, perhaps not overpriced >10.000USD gaming laptop, I don't even consider that an option.

Get a windows tablet and a Desktop PC for gaming.
Or don't get anything at all for gaming and focus on studying.
Don't get a heavy gaming laptop, that is BS for studying.

I personally have a gaming laptop. Like the TC, I needed both worlds, not prioritizing one.

I have the Sager NP 7338 and quite frankly it's my third arm. This baby flies and I was able to play Witcher 3 extremely fluent on medium settings. I was extremely please. The applications I use for coursework aren't taxing in the least to this bad boy and I haven't regretted my purchase.

Laptops aren't for gaming lol. Alienware and Asus are nuts.
What exactly makes them "not for gaming"? A laptop is just a portable PC, and while I am fully willing to accept that a desktop will have more firepower 9 out of 10 times, you're also not going to go anywhere with it.

@OP If this is supposed to be a business and pleasure sort of an affair, go for a laptop. There's nothing that beats the comfort of a full QWERTY keyboard and while touchscreens are all fun and games, a laptop is more rugged, more reliable and better cooled than a tablet, not to mention that they tend to have more "oomph". even a Windows one like the Surface. If you insist on a tablet though, make it a convertible one or at least pick up a USB/bluetooth keyboard for it.

I'll give you many reasons!
1. Expensive. In comparison to a gaming PC, gaming laptops of similar specs are expensive.
2. LMAO laptop CPUs.
3. Non upgradeable. All I saw was upgradeable ram lol.
4. Tend to overheat.
5. Tend to get their integrated kB destroyed.
6. IGDPMD64.SYS

Additional reasons:
1. The key advantage of a Laptop against a Desktop is portability.
2. A laptop that can handle gaming tends to be big, heavy and energy hungry.
3. So for gaming you kill comfortable portability.
4. And it still is more expensive and less powerful than a desktop.
5. So... Why...

Because if you want both PC gaming and portability, a laptop is the best of both worlds. It's definitely not a "primary rig for Ultra Settings lelele PC Mustard Race", but a decent laptop is nothing to scoff at when you know you'll have to be on-the-go with your computer. It's a superior solution to a tablet in every possible way and a perfect marriage of a machine dedicated for gaming and a machine dedicated for course work.

But the Meister Reis!?
J/K.
But I am not satisfied with my bulky-PoS-barely-passable-not-even-30FPS-on-720p-for-old-Mass-Effect-2-overperformed-by-my-old-and-defunct-2-bucks-desktop-9800GT-based-sytem Laptop.

Like I said, if you're aiming at ultra detail, 60FPS+ 1080p and beyond, laptop is not something for ya, but if you're okay with sacrificing some detail in exchange for portability, it's practically the only reasonable option there is. Even if we don't consider gaming at all, I can't even imagine doing course work on a tablet - thanks, but no thanks. ;)

The tablet will destroy the laptop just as the smartphone destroyed the dedicated handheld before it. The end is near. :ninja:
Not a chance. We'll probably see more and more laptops with touchscreens, but laptops as a form factor will not be retired simply due to their convenience, much like the iMacs and eMacs did not retire traditional desktop towers. A laptop is simply the minimal configuration of an actual PC - a screen, a keyboard, a pointer device and the guts proper. Tablets are all nice and dandy, so are detachable keyboards, but not every portable computer has to be a slate - it's counterproductive in many cases.

If you want to know what the future will hold, look at what kids are doing. They don't use laptops.

You have to differentiate between "toys" and "tools". A tablet is an entertainment device first and foremost, a laptop is not - a laptop is a portable form-factor of a normal PC.

I just want to add, many laptops actually upgradable. Want a better CPU or (rarer) GPU? You actually can get replacements. The only issues to consider are the thermal capacity of the cooler, and the BIOS compatibility. And the price... Upgrading laptops isn't cheap.

Also, you can get laptops that do get 60fps at 1080p or above on ultra detail. Some laptops even have SLI graphics capable of 4K gameplay. Stupidly expensive, and rather heavy beasts, but they call them "desktop replacements" for a reason.

But for most people, they'll opt for an affordable laptop because gaming isn't their primary concern, and if they're going to game on a laptop, they usually don't need the best hardware when it's just a 15" screen. And portability is always a factor - like how I used to enjoy taking my 17" gaming laptop to friends houses for LAN parties.

A lot of people are only considering the mainstream laptops like Alienware of the *shudders* Razer Blade. There are some cost effective gaming laptops out there that provide above average cooling, awesome (albeit mobile) graphics cards, and aren't that heavy.

Point in cases being those from Sager, MSI, and others.

Exactly. NVIDIA shield FTW!

If I have let's say $1000 and want something for both gaming and work, I'd spend $800 on a gaming PC and the rest on an APU driven laptop. I'm gonna use notepad or word anyway :)
