Does it really matter? If you are wanting to avoid certain serial numbers, the last thing you should be doing is making a blind purchase from an online retailer. And if you are purchasing from a retail store, you'll be able to see the serial on the side of the box before purchasing.

I feel that it's almost certain Nintendo is going to restock the New 3DS XL's with 9.4 now that the current stock is out. This really blows

It's possible, but I think that it wouldn't be probable. If anything, they'd just start out at 9.5 stock for the new systems that are going out. Hopefully, there will be more <9.2 versions out there. With each passing day though, the speculation grows and grows.

Not necessarily true. Nintendo didn't necessarily exhaust their entire <9.2 batch in the first shipment. Remember, one of the tried and true methods of increasing demand for a new product is by artificially limiting supply. They might have only sent out a third of what they had to retailers, leaving plenty of older units still available for restocking shipments. We will have to wait and see.

They have already been manufacturing new Red XLs and shipped them to US and Canada. That to me signals that they needed more stock as they had shipped all they had.

Order of production based on the serials.

Black N3DS XL, Batch 1 Red and MM XL (9.0)
MH XL (9.2)
Batch 2 Red (9.4)

It is of course possible that they will ship some more Black XLs on 9.0-9.2, but at this point anything serial over 4025 or so has been produced with 9.4. This is strictly for the US and Canada as units produced for Europe might be completely different. But we know as of now that the US/CA received shipments of the latest manufactured XLs which were Red on 9.4.

If we care about Japanese consoles, my N3DS white came with 8.1. I'll post it later.

I recommend either Target or K-Mart, seems like they are still getting <9.2 stock for N3DS.
I got mine from Target and it was 9.0

I think Nintendo is purposely liimting stock so you can't look at the serial number before you buy.

Called K-mart and the woman said "oh god no, only online now"

Wow looks like the 9.0 line might die really soon.
I agree.
Until the second batch of N3DS consoles arrive, we cannot know for sure, but my guess goes that they will all be above 9.2.
The only 9.2 consoles so far have been the Monster Hunter LE N3DS, out of those either 9.0 or 9.4

I have an AUS N3DS, of the first to be publically released.

Version Number (up to the first 4 digits): QAH1003
Region: EUR / AUS
Firmware: It came with 9.0.0E, I updated it myself to 9.2.0-20E
I obviously dont have any images or proof.
System Color (checking a hunch): Black

They'll most likely be 9.4 and above but you never know cause Nintendo's weird.

Just bought a QW1025 Black (though it's more greyish) hot off the truck at Target. It's showing 9.0.0.

This is East Coast USA.
